What does everyone think about getting a group together and going down to Harris County/Houston this weekend and helping out? We all have experience with buildings in bad condition, I think assisting here is well suited to our particular skills.

Very likely you will get in over your head quit literally.
Many roads will not be passible.
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

Lol, I'm sure they fire a warning shot in your foot before shooting you.
Last thing these people want to see are tourists gawking at their wrecked lives... and rain.

Not sure how expert building urbexers wading around in the flood are going to help but try not to become another victim requiring rescue please Ive got friends and family that are first responders there right now and they are overwhelmed
They need real help not people getting in the way do you plan to stay at one of the shelters? There are no hotel rooms available.

Add to that the sewer systems are not working in most (all?) areas.
Do the math, 8 million people.
The risk of water borne infectious disease will be present and real.
Better bring a week's worth of water will you.
Fuel will be hard to come by and maybe water contaminated and unusable. Better bring enough.
You may not have auto insurance coverage if you deliberately go into a disaster area (acts of god) and aren't a first responder or live there.
Unless you can help those victims by providing needed services, don't go.
Just a really bad idea... this area is huge and still largely impassable.
This is no go zone now and it's going to get worse.

Im gonna stop you right there. As a Houston drainer, I need to inform you that this is wrong. So very wrong. Houston has one of the best drainage systems in the entire country, hands down. Its working perfectly. But no water relief system can handle 5 ft of rain in a couple days. Without he system they have, or with a worse one, people would have been underwater in a matter of a day, not the couple it took for most places to flood.
That being said, I agree that OP should stay away and that explorers are no adequate substitute for emergency teams. I believe you would realize quickly that theres proper disaster relief teams for things like this for a reason. Its not a citizens job to come in blazing to try and help people in a situation like this, especially if youre not already in it.
If youre CPR and first aid certified, have major flood disaster experience, a boat, and lifeguard training skills then maybe but even then, i wouldn't. (I have all of these qualifications and wouldn't voluntarily jump into this from out of town)
Theres been a large number of (about 8500 or so) emergency responders from all over the country flown into coastal texas to Louisiana to help with storm and flood rescue.
Also 2X, im going to respond to your hotel comment and say that theres open hotels with vacancies in pasadena for sure. Im responding to this incase someone needs that info.

That was my point. There's no operating sanitary sewage system and there won't be for days maybe weeks.
And it's in the streets.
Toilets wouldn't flush.
No place for showers to drain even if there is tap water pressure.
It's not a question of quality, it's quantity.
The sewers are flooded with rain/flood water.
I suspect most of the pump stations and sewage plants... are submerged.
Even 10 inches put them offline in 2015.

As a former National Guard puke I have seen (twice) firsthand what happens when you put people without skills into rescue situations where skills are needed.
Even with our "Rescue 101" crash course we were pretty much useless.
Take the money you'd spend on the trip and send it to a relief effort or someone you know down there who needs it.

It's a kind thought, OP, and not even a bad idea, but to be the most beneficial to the people that need the help, push back the timeline.
Pick a time when the media has lost interest in this disaster, the water has receded, and the host of other life-threatening perils have subsided as well. I mean like a while - a few weeks or even months from now.
If you give it some time, you would be more likely to be of maximum assistance to the people that need it the most. The majority of us in a few weeks will have moved on with our lives and this will be a thing of the past, but not for the millions of people that live along the coastline. Their needs are the only needs that should matter to anyone seriously interested in helping.
If you are really interested and have the time to spare, do what I did and join the Red Cross as a volunteer. They offer excellent training and you can help people in meaningful ways… Safely!
