We have a huge Ukrainian community where I live and if you drive anywhere outside the city, there are a lot of old Churches and cemeteries. I haven't spent a lot of time in them because it's cold but took a few pics here and there.

These pics are from Paris where I spent probably too much of my time there in graveyards. I had to go see Jim Morrison's grave. There's a couple from the catacombs too which is like one giant underground grave.

The "Irish Lot" is a very small cemetery in Rhode Island with graves dating back to the early 1700s. Some of the headstones have circular holes bored through them and its something of a mystery as to what caused them exactly. The prevailing theory is that they are bullet holes.

Interesting. Are they limestone?
I doubt it's a bullet hole; it would have cracked the slab. If it is a bullet hole that didn't spite the slab one side will show missing chips on the exit side.
More likely a vein of softer lime acid rain eroded away over time. Or a damaged spot from quarrying/hammer drilling that wasn't as obvious at the time it was cut but accelerated the erosion of the stone at that spot.

Many of the old limestone and marble headstones have been heavily damaged in the last century or so by acid rain especially in the NE
200 years ago this wasn't an issue... until the industrial age.
Granite fairs much better.

From what I'm finding on the internet, they are made of slate. I'm no expert on the specific qualities of stones, but I also think bullets would have cracked or shattered the headstones. From what I recall, both sides of the holes looked pretty much the same. I didn't think of acid rain; that could definitely cause weaker areas to erode quicker. That seems like a better theory to me than bullet holes.

Is that a real skull in the first one, or is it just a prop? If it's real, what was it doing outside a grave?

Real. Sitting on that busted above ground grave. It was in this little piss poor little town in Belize. We were just exploring around on the honeymoon.

Where is this?
That's very strange. Never saw anything quite like this.
At first I thought the pic wasn't squared off then realized the lean is that bad.

Reminds me of the pics from that cemetery in Argentina on the basic DB. I think there was a skull above ground in that set.
