"The teenager fell down an elevator shaft of the former United Hospital building late Tuesday night and was taken to Greenwich Hospital, where he died, Port Chester police said. Police have not released the boy's name yet. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victim," Port Chester Police Chief Richard Conway said in a press release."
I explored that place in 2008 with a fairly large group of people.
The electric was still on in some of the complex, but not all of it. Apparently there was a remote transmitter on the roof and they continued to keep power in certain buildings. There were phone lines on the floor, running down the middle of a corridor and up to a locked room at the roof level. A few of the elevators were also operational.
There was 24 hour security on the property at that time, but the guards never left their shack. We were in there for hours making all kinds of noise and they never went to do rounds or investigate.
A few weeks later, a person (he's a UER Mod) went there to do a model shoot with some women and got busted within minutes of going in the building.
I went there again a few months later to do some recon on the guards. You know, just drive straight to the guard shack and engage the guards in conversation. Walk slow, look dumb and act stupid while you scope out their gear. I didn't see any kind of alarm panels or monitors, so maybe that bust was dumb luck.
The owners are still embroiled in controversy with the city over how the place gets redeveloped.

Better to get busted than busted up...
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in.

My first and only trip inside was six years after you. Power was still on, place was a mess. Tags everywhere. I did hang out on that roof though that day though. You could just barely see Manhattan, but the view of Long Island was awesome. I think I wound up getting 5 photos at the most in the whole place. Wish I went when you did.

I only took 3 pictures. It wasn't really that interesting of a place.
We were too busy having gurney races through the halls. They weren't actually gurneys, but more like carts for moving The Machine that goes PING around the building.
Even the souvenir collecting stunk. From the looks of things, they had an auction of the contents of the hospital and all that was left was stuff they couldn't give away, never mind sell at auction. Like the parking lot tokens.
Apparently the way they controlled the access to the parking lot was with tokens. You got the token from the security office and then put the token in a coin slot to open the gate. The security office in the hospital had huge pile of tokens on the floor, but the tokens didn't have the hospital's name on them. The tokens just said like Joe Blow Parking Systems on them. Who would want those? Only stooges that got conned into buying the same crapola parking system, that's who.
One guy found some packets of tuna in the kitchen area and he ate it. As far as I know, he survived.
There had to have been 30 people in there that day. I think only 2 of them belonged to UER. Even I didn't belong to UER at that time.
That was just sort of a messed up day all around.
This blurry cell phone pic of a sign mentions the parking tokens.

How was the roof's condition? It doesn't seem abandoned long enough to be structurally weak, plus if the boy fell down an elevator shaft, that's usually a separate motor and hoist room, I start to get the impression he was taking some kind of added risk monkeying around. I won't explore alongside teenagers, but when there were tons of them at Byberry every fri/sat night, they would do dumb risky stuff just to show off, accelerated by the newfound vice of alcohol.

I suspect he was running from the cops. A leap of faith.

The roof was sound. Had a nice big railing and everything. Im assuming he fell down that in an effort to hide or flee.
Posted by yaggy Oh I guess I missed a crucial detail? Didn't realize he was being pursued or that cops were in the building.
It seems to be implied. Unfortunately they arrived too late to save him from himself. I'm wondering if there's an elevator room on the roof and he thought it was a stairway. Never know where a doorway leads...

i have a theory that scrappers may have done damage to the area he was hiding in which caused him to fall through. i know for a fact scrappers were LIVING in there and scrapping on a regular basis.
