First Nations Longhouse

This was an unusual find today and a pleasant surprise. Satellite imagery had me expecting a mansion of some sort but as I rolled up the driveway I was pleased to see that it's actually a large log cabin. The style of the building suggests that it was previously a First Nation's longhouse, there are many out here in British Columbia but I haven't been in one since an elementary school field trip long ago. This one is fairly modern, real estate listings from a couple of years ago list the build date as 1981, which explains the hot tub and indoor swimming pool. The interior wood work, especially on the arched ceilings, is just awesome. Must have been used as some sort of cultural/recreational center.

Information on the history of the building is scarce, going to ask a local later this week.

Sweet find! That's really quite a big space. What's in numbers 7 and 8?
Looks like the bike is paying off

Not sure what number 8 is, might have had some fish in it or something at one point, the water looked pretty gross so I didn't bother disturbing the surface. Number 7 may have been an outdoor swimmin' hole, it has a small dock. This location was probably a pretty decent place to hang out when it was operational.

The bike has been an absolute blast and has totally changed the way that I explore. I used to worry about fuel cost, plan location scouts a week in advance, perform 2 or 3 drive by trips before attempting entry, and turn around if I couldn't find a discreet parking spot. With the bike I've become much more impulsive and confident diving right into anything that catches my eye, knowing that there will almost always be a good place to hide it, that in many cases other vehicles can't follow me in, that I'm already wearing a protective jacket, gloves, and helmet, and that I can outrun just about anybody with ease provided I get to the bike first.

Nice find!!

You've posted a lot of stuff lately and I gotta ask HOW do you find all this on your motorcycle? When I take mine for rides I'm always on the lookout and rarely find anything of interest! You are a lucky guy! haha

This recent string of locations was all chance, I was riding around on my lunch break and took a wrong turn, stumbled upon an entire city block that has been bought up and rezoned. They were only abandoned within the last year and should all be gone by the end of summer at the rate the demolition crew is currently working. Because of that they cannot easily be found with the usual method of spotting clues from satellite view, these last few places all look occupied from space.

That being said, finding this block taught me a pretty simple lesson, follow the development. The Lower Mainland and greater Vancouver are growing at an insanely rapid pace, every residential neighborhood west of Hope is growing outward in all possible directions like an organism, eating up every old BC box in its path. You'll find more derelicts on the edges of neighborhoods than in the middle, and they don't last very long. It's the properties with the big backyards that are being bought up and turned into condos or suburban clusters, and fortunately they're also the properties with the longest and most overgrown driveways, providing plenty of cover from pedestrians and neighbors.

An easy way to spot rezoned properties is to just keep an eye out for these signs, they usually mean that the property behind them is no longer occupied.

It also helps that I commute 140 km or more every day. I absolutely love riding so I only take the back roads to/from work and I try to change it daily, exploring new side streets each time.

Maybe one of these days we ought to go for a ride around Langley or something. Or better yet if you'd like to make a bit of a trip out of it I could show you a pretty cool spot out in Chilliwack River Valley and a great dual sport/ADV riding loop through the mountains.
