Saw A guy with a shotgun by the vineyards (looked like vineyards from the hotel) on the hill behind the hotel. He was yelling something and flashing his gun with no problem so we left. I can see him shooting his gun to scare people away. Using caution is a must here. this went down on a weekday morning.

I’m here in Monterey for my annual thanksgiving pilgrimage. Of course, I had to go check out Ord since that’s become a bit of a tradition for me - especially now that it’s coming down faster and faster. I had some limited success, but i did find a couple buildings that are very recently vacated and i hope to have the chance to attempt those before I leave on Tuesday. The prevalence of vandalism there is just incredible.
I decided to drive out to the San Joaquin area and check out a remote ghost/mining town out there. That was extremely cool, but I’m glad I borrowed my mom’s 4wd to do that one. The only negative to that adventure was underestimating how remote the area was and my half a tank of gas didn’t quite cut it. I ended up buying gas off of a local farmer to make it to a gas station, lol.
Hopefully, I’ll be able to put together a post of this year’s exploits and share. In the meantime, if anyone within a couple hours of Monterey is interested in meeting up, let me know. I have yet to meet any of you guys from this area, so that would be pretty awesome.
Well, I’m driving back to Monterey now, so I’ll leave it at that and hopefully be back with some interesting updates!
Edit: I just now realized how off-topic my post is here. Sorry about that. I got into the comments and I guess I lost sight of the “best explore” theme.
To answer that one directly, I’d say probably Fort Ord, simply because I’ve been exploring it for years and have yet to not find something new every time I come out this way within Ord’s massive boundaries. I did explore a Naval Station just south of Monterey/Carmel and got lucky with my timing on that one last year... that comes in second place probably due to the uncharacteristic lack of vandalism in parts. Cheers.

Bummer! I'm just seeing this and would have loved to meet up! Another time and Ord is great. I've explored it a few times and have always found something new to see

Amen to Ord! I didn’t have time to do the impossible city - that’s one I really want to do ASAP. I went out there my first night in town but kinda creeped myself out thinking I could hear boars snorting in the shadows and big cats salivating at my jugular, lol. I decided I would pick a more diurnal time and go back next time, or at the very least, not a moonless night (I don’t know how much of my preoccupation was justified, but probably at least a little bit).
Yeah, I’m sorry I ran out of time, I always hate leaving here. But I’m back every year... hopefully we’ll meet next time.

Right across the way from Fort Ord, there is an abandoned water treatment plant.
Its pretty neat, but also be careful and I would wear a mask as there is a lot of still water etc.

I’m familiar with the water Tx plant but assumed it had once been a part of Ord?
There is also another location further south a ways that I came across a couple years ago. It was a naval station. Honestly, I was pretty shocked I hadn’t noticed it a decade ago when my family had a place out there. Has anyone that might have been there learned anything more about that one?

I've always assumed the tx plant was a part of Ord too since I think the boundary was the ocean.

It’s worth a visit. Easy to access but I went predawn so I could get in without worrying about being seen. Most of it is heavily vandalized, but there’s a large building in the back that was fenced in (within the fenced in portion), that was much more recently abandoned or maybe just more recently breached. I suspect the former because I noticed that back building still had some indicator lights working on some portable batteries in there. The other buildings are way too far gone to even have those kinds of items inside them, so I enjoyed taking some overall landscape photos in the other parts due to the really beautiful scenery, but that back building is definitely a more interesting explore than most of the forward sections. Keep us posted if you do get out there, it’s a decent little spot if that building is still intact!

JUST WOW! At that old super market building being so torn up now. (The building in your images 15 - 19) I was in that very same building a few years ago and this is a picture I took almost in the same spot as you where:

While that site isn't in the SF Bay area, it was probably one of my best explores in California, as I had official access to the site (unfortunately, not to include the Terminal Building, aka Ops Building, as it was still owned by the USN), so I could explore at a leisurely pace, instead of having to sneak & peek.

You can see the Ops building now. I strongly suspect that is the newer building that had the "fence within a fence" in the very back of the property. I don't think it had been accessible long so I guess I got lucky. That said, I was there over a year ago, so who knows what it looks like now...

My lady and I visited this popular urban exploration site. The hotel was very very amazing and my lady captured interesting p.o.v of several different rooms and floors. we were unable to access the roof on the other hand. BE CAREFUL OF THE GROUNDS KEEPER. as we were leaving we heard a gun shot and a whizzing by us! We looked to the palm trees by the vineyard hill and some guy walked out from hiding with a large rifle. he didnt fire again but that was good enough for us. We have plentiful photos from our visit but dont plan on returning for some time lol 1.

Had an extremely scary run in with the owners/caretakers of the land that The Byron sits on. Do not recommend going there.
