First time posting, and i'm planning a trip to Gary this friday. Im bringing a friend and we've decided that we have to visit the church and school for sure, are there any any other must sees for our visit? Also safety is of course a huge concern so any notes on that would be appreciated.

Hurry and go make some posts in a bunch of other threads so it doesn't look like this is your only post ever. Welcome to the site. We'd love to see some of your previous explores.

I honestly can't tell if that was sarcasm. Spamming the forums with posts does not equate with increased credibility. If there are photos but not much discussion beyond that, you might as well just post in the photography forum. Regardless, just go to Gary. You don't really need a planned out agenda. Get there early enough and dive in. You can go in virtually any direction from the Church/School and find interesting ruins and abandoned things to explore. I say "get there early" because you'll run out of hours in a day before you run out of discoveries. Have fun and be safe.

Since it's your first trip, I advise knocking the popular stuff out first so you get familiar with the area. Go north-south in downtown... it's probably the safest area for newbies. The further away you get from Broadway, the more aware you need to be of your surroundings -- though really I'm yet to be in a real dangerous situation in Gary.

A solid day for you would be Union Station -> Church -> Post Office -> Palace. Yeah they've all be photographed to death, but it's still a cool experience if you've never been, and you can kill a whole day between those four.

Good luck.

In my experience, they're all still cool no matter how many times you've been in them. You can't go wrong for a good time in Gary.

There are many many things to see in Gary, pick a couple of places you know you want to see and then just drive around after that.
