I've had this school on my list for awhile now but since it's over 4 hours from where I live, I wasn't going to make a special trip just for it. But an opportunity recently presented itself and I was passing by the area on a non-exploring-related trip so I made a quick stop. It was built in two phases, completed in 1925 and 1926, after the former mining town's original schoolhouse burned in 1924. The 1925 and 1926 buildings were once separate but were combined at some point with an ugly center addition. The school closed in 1997 after its students were consolidated into another district. From 1999 to 2006, the building operated as a visitor center for the two surrounding towns and the railroad. It is one of the few remaining structures from the early era of the town. The property is owned by a local group who want to turn the former school into housing for the elderly.

Cool set! It looks almost like a typical clipart schoolhouse from the outside, if all clipart was designed by urban explorers (now there's a thought!). Those windows in numbers six and seven... you won't see any school these days with something as humane and thoughtful as natural light! Love the texture on number 5.
All that graffiti though-- I don't really get why people always see the need to draw dicks on things. Do the think they're insulting someone, or being transgressive, or do they just lack imagination? It's not transgressive, it's not insulting, it's just a bad drawing of genitalia. Get over yourselves!

I totally agree about those windows. That must have been nice. The high school I went to was built in 1997 and basically looks like a box with little airholes. It always seemed so dark inside.
I don't understand the graffiti either. I picture a bunch of teenagers giggling and elbowing each other going "hey, look what I just wrote on the wall!" I'm not sure they're trying to say anything with it; they probably just have too much time on their hands and think it's funny for some reason.

Totally agree. I've thrown away more then a few shots after noticing either dicks, swastikas or misspelled slurs on the walls in the background.
