We've probably all been here, but nevertheless I still love this place:
After the violent storms Tuesday night, Wednesday turned out to be a gorgeous day; perfect for visiting my favorite spot. This was my first time visiting the incinerator during the day and it was interesting getting to see the bottom of the pits for once. (Sadly I don't have a picture.) This was also my first and only visit to the incinerator where I didn't encounter any other people. Most of the people you encounter here are harmless teenagers, but occasionally you come across something a little more sketchy. My second visit to this place involved an encounter with a group of rednecks tripping on shrooms. They were friendly, but not the type of people you want to mess with... If you visit this spot, travel in a group and be prepared to see other people.

Approaching the forboding incinerator...
Looking up the chimney. You can actually go inside the chimney (and climb it if you're brave enough) but you can't see out the top because the chimneys have been sealed shut for some reason.
This is the area where trucks used to drive by to collect the ashes of burned trash. Now, however, its just a spot to take a mildly edgy twitter header photo.
View of the chimneys from the roof. The water is not normally there but it was pooling from the recent storms. It made for quite an interesting effect! You can sort of make out the large steel caps that are placed on top of the chimney in this photo.

I went there once. Didn't get a video of it, but there's a shaft in there (it's on the 2nd floor once you climb up the first stairs from the ground) that's somehow still turning on its own. You can see a slowly spinning shaft, which is slightly creepy since the place has been abandoned for 50 years so there shouldn't be any power. It could be wind powered, but I don't see any turbines on the outside that would power it.
Do you think we, or anyone else reading this, could go together one day? I know the routes to get there by public transit, I remember where the entrance is. I'd like to go back and record that spinning shaft, would be fun to go with someone else too.

I know exactly what you're talking about! It does spin under wind power and its very creepy to see. I've only seen it moving on windy days and it seems to have a good deal of inertia keeping it turning when the wind stops.
