Sooo as the ski season is winding down, I'm starting to think about exploring again. Anyone out there living in the Koots? Or perhaps planning any trips in this direction? I live in Nelson, and the DB looks pretty sparse around here... Still got my eye on a couple of places. And I'm thinking I'll make a trip out along hwy 31A to Sandon/Cody area, maybe camping as well! Who's in?

Two members of one of the bands I'm playing in right now were born and grew up in Nelson, we're planning a road trip out there to play a show hopefully this summer or fall. Any time we travel more than a few hundred kilometers for a show I put together a list of locations that I want to hit up on the way and then I leave a couple of days in advance to give myself time to find them. This Nelson trip will be my first opportunity to check out Sandon and the rest of the Valley of the Ghosts. A couple of weeks ago we played a show in Jasper, AB and I found a few interesting spots on the way, but I cut north early on and pretty much bypassed the Kootenays. Last summer I did a road trip through the southern Kootenays (Fraser Valley to Crowsnest and back) and there were a handful of interesting spots (Greenwood, Grand Forks, Moyie, Hosmer areas) but not necessarily close to Nelson. Here are some photos from my last trip through the Kootenays.

Nice! Always down for some live music! Where are you playing? Yeah, I drove through the area this fall and saw lots of stuff to check out. I was hitchhiking though so couldn't really stop at the time. I think I'll probably go out there more than once this summer, so hopefully I'll have found something cool. ;)
Man you don't bypass the Kootenays... Nelson is on the way to basically nothing at all unless you live here. Yeah, I'd love to check out some further places but I'm afraid I grew up a city boy and don't have a license.

I've been to Cody. Check the gallery in the DB - that's me. Cool area, and I hope to go back that way soon for a larger explore. (I'm in the Okanagan area)

No set date or venue yet but they're pretty adamant on doing at least one show in Nelson this year so when it's booked I'll try to remember to message you the venue. If you're interested you can stop by for a drink and maybe we'll plan a quick explore in the area for the following day before I head back west.

Let me know if you do! I was in Vernon last year. Didn't really find much in town. Seems like it would be decent if you had a car, though.

For sure dude! Sounds like a plan. I may end up on the island this summer in the end. I'm not good at making plans. I've got my eye on a few places out there too, though. So, it should be pretty good either way.

Whoa another user from Nelson?! I was planning on making a trip through the Sandon area myself!

Great pics! I'm heading this way for a week in August and hadn't thought about exploring but looks like some great places. That graffiti tunnel thing is awesome!

Just droppin' a heads up that I won't be heading out to the Kootenays until probably the second half of August or maybe even early September now. Had an off-road spill on my bike last Thursday, stitches across my knee cap, will be at least another 2 weeks of recovery before I can ride again. That being said I'm still dead set on making the trip this summer and would still like to meet up with anybody available in the region for a trip up to 31A and the surrounding ghost towns.

^^^Hope you're on the mend, EPOCH6! How's the smoke down that way?? I know it varies from day to day. Epoch, I may be able to make a trip down in September. If no one else steps up. Keep me posted on your planning.

Hey folks, I seem to have accidentally unfaved this thread. I am indeed still in Nelson if anyone wants to meet up! Epoch, that's super shitty dude! I wish you a speedy recovery so we can check out 31A in the future! I'm actually planning a bicycle touring trip with some friends through the area, so that will hopefully provide some useful recon.

So I got to check out 31A and some of its classic spots last weekend but I ended up incorporating it into the return route of a road trip to Alberta with my mother, so I didn't have any extra time to get ahold of anyone for a group explore. I love exploring the Kootenays and will certainly be heading out there again next summer. Here are some of my favorite shots from last weekend, full albums will be uploaded to the corresponding DB entries. Sandon

Your pics are amazing! I didn't make it down there this summer but it's still on the list. Thanks for sharing.

Ha! Funny you just got up there - I just got back from a trip to Sandon/Cody as well! Pics coming soon of course...

Nice! I was planning to head that way one week, but the day before I found myself under forest fire evacuation order. Just another ordinary summer here in BC!

Seems like fires, smoke and evacuation orders are the new norm!
