I hitchhike on my way to locations sometimes because I don't have a car and the public transport system can be unreliable/not go everywhere. Does anyone else do this? Any good stories?

I've done it before (not to explore), but learned that you cannot truly judge a book by its cover. The people who actually stopped were all tatted up, wearing all black - the type of people society sometimes frowns upon and also not the type of person you might imagine going out of their way to help some strangers. But they picked us up, even made room for us in their tiny car but putting stuff in the trunk, and drove us into town.
Another story -
I would normally pick up hitchhikers when I was in college. One night I was heading home from a friend's house, or class or something, and I picked up this guy with a little dog in the downtown area. He definitely had been drinking. So he has me drive waaaaaaay into the middle of f'n nowhere to drop him off at his "aunt's house" or something like that. And he couldn't remember where the place actually was.
So we drove around on back ass roads for a long time, while he is rambling about nonsense. He then brings up that he always carries a gun on him for protection or something like that. At this point in time I'm definitely sweating.
We do eventually find his aunt's house and he asks me if I wanted to come in for a beer or something like that. I was like, "no thanks - bye!" and booked it out of there.

Also, when you are hitchhiking to locations. Do you have them drop you off really close by, or what is your story?

I've hitched home (or back to public transit) a few times after the night got away from me and I found myself too tired to walk all the way.
To date, I haven't been stabbed or raped to death, but I'm a big guy, so not a lot of people are interested in starting shit with me. (I'm actually always surprised when someone actually picks me up.)

I usually just get them to drop me off at somewhere nearby, and tell them I'm meeting friends or something. Usually whoever picks me up just asks where I want to go and drops me off there without asking too many questions.

I've always had good experiences hitchhiking. I think as long as you're careful you'll be ok. There's also the fact that I live in a pretty small town, which I'm sure helps.

Personally, I would not do it because I am too young and really would be to scared. But as an adult, it sounds like a great option to get to places fast and easy.

Haha, I've heard people talking about taking Uber's up to locations, but not sure if anyone has done it for real or not, but it's a funny idea that might work (or might backfire).

I'm an Uber driver part time.
We're sorta like retail workers...we truly do not care. Also long drives are awesome for us.
The only down side to this is if your driver is nosy, I guess. I'd probably note this place for myself and come back to explore later, tbh.
EDIT:
You should know that the Uber app is always tracking our location (and therefore your drop-off point, along with your name, the card you used to pay, etc). The con to this is that if they wanted to disclose the location and your identity to authorities, they could. The pro is that if something goes wrong, at least someone could find you?
Thought this was a relevant point, didn't want to leave it out. :\

I wouldn't risk it considering how terrible the world has become. I wouldn't even do it if I was forced to walk somewhere 10 miles away.
