I thought about putting this on the newbie thread but I have noticed the newbie thread doesn't target who I want to talk to - the SE people. It also seems that there is a smaller group of active SE people who post. Since I'm in ATL, I thought I would say HI to my southern comrades in exploring. I hope that's ok...... about moi: I'm maybe a bit older than some, younger at heart than most. This is a pic of me, I get asked that all the time, yes, it's me. Good lighting and my momma's eyes. I am a bioengineer by education, research microbiologist by trade and explorer at heart. I think it's natural to have a researcher be an explorer. I love to see the beauty where others see nothing of value. I see the connections where others see chaos. I tend to be quiet, but the mind is always going...going....going..... I look forward to getting to know y'all and hopefully exploring with you some day.

lets see some photos and what camera do you like etc

Welcome! Welcome! From another newbie in AL!

I need to replace my camera - I only have an iPhone 6+ and the camera went wonky. I have a new part on order bc the Apple store won't fix the phone - they say it has water damage.....so, I'm having it fixed by someone who doesn't give a F what Apple says. Love handy friends Anyway - I look forward to getting my phone fixed and uploading some pix - please be gentle though, I'm a scientist, not an artist and I just take pictures of what I like. I don't claim to be any good at this. Esp not compared to the talent I see here. Y'all are pretty awesome! I'm also a little apprehensive to go places alone being a SWF. In ya'lls opinion, is that a justified fear or am I just being over cautious? I've read some posts about carrying a pack of smokes, etc., but is it safe for a woman to explore alone in Atlanta? (side note - if anyone can recommend a good stand alone camera that's under $300, I would like to not depend on my phone for pix)

@dunderitis: ack! What am I doing wrong? I resized the image to the 800 x 600 limit and it still said my file was too big. I think I need to go visit some tutorial threads....bear with me. Don't get too excited bc I'm a real newbie. I only have one pic to share on this computer and its not a great find. I feel the need to give some backstory on me. Here's how I got into this: I was hired as a microbiologist for a plastics manufacturer - they have problems with certain bacteria in their liquid finishes...anyway.....they were housed in this 1950's dairy plant that sprawled over a 2 MILE campus right on the rail line. It was out in the boondocks of Covington, GA. Anyway, it was converted in the 80's to a carpet mill, then in the 2000's to what it is today, a polyolefin synthetic textile producer. There are parts of the plant that still are loaded with asbestos - wide open too....- places that no one ever goes into. One section has these HUGE locker rooms and the fluorescent light fixtures are hanging on by one wire, water dripping and the lights flickering...right out of a horror movie. There are sections of the internal "parts" department that have parts from the dairy and then parts from the carpet mill....in dusty bins that haven't been touched in decades....the place was MASSIVE and I had very little to do so I explored a LOT. I didn't know this was interesting to other people though and bc I worked there, it didn't occur to me to take pics. Now that I left, and I can't have my daily fix of exploration, I started looking around and that's how I found there are other people who like doing this, find it a fascinating look back in time. Shoot - there was even a notice still up, dated 1990 when the carpet mill closed telling the employees what to do to out process....that place was and is a gold mine! I wonder if they would let me in as just a person to explore? I kinda doubt it bc the safety factor but I'm soooo kicking myself for not taking pictures. I can only chalk it up to naivety and move on..... bummer though.... so, since then, I haven't found much I can explore. Its mostly inhibited by my unwillingness to wander in some of these areas alone. Seems really dangerous for a single woman.

Welcome to the forums! Despite not taking pictures, the description of the place was good. The mental images I was able to conjure up were very cool indeed. Good job.

@pip lol - thanks for trying to understand my babble. It is intimidating jumping into a group like this. I appreciate your kindness. On the other hand...I'm assuming @Dunderitis disagrees that my description was decent :-p I see who's going to haze me a bit. Thanks ok....thank you sir, may I have another. Now if you don't know that movie, I'm afraid I can't associate with you. Happy Friday Y'all my countdown to FREEEEEEDOM has stated...T minus 6.5 hours to sweet, sweet freedom !!

I think this miniature version of the original will upload. This is a pic I do have. These are pre Civil War ruins of a paper mill. They were very close to my childhood home and in those days (yeah...me old) we were "free range kids" and I was one to wander in the woods for hours until the street lights came on. That's how we told time back in the dinosaur age.

Not to hijack your thread with an off topic comment but since you brought it up... Its SO funny that you should mention this. I was just talking to my daughter about this yesterday! I suspect you and I are around the same age. My parents would literally lock the door and tell me to go play outside until the street lights came on! They never knew where I was or what I was doing. When I had kids, we lived facing a small cul-de-sac with 6 other families all with kids about the same age. Nice neighborhood in the Houston 'burbs and we all turned our kids loose too. My daughter (who's now 21) was telling me that she cant believe that we did that and then regaled me with tales of daring do that resulted from our lack of supervision. Had I known the kinds of things they were doing she never would have left the house but I did the same things and she's turned out to be a great kid. I'm grateful that my parents gave me the freedom to explore the world on my own and my daughter is too. It can be a tough world out there but honestly, the overprotection that we instill on our kids these days does them a tremendous disservice and stifles not only the adventurer that is in every kid but prevents them from learning on their own. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I'm hoping that I can offer lots and LOTS of free "environmental profiling" I don't mind a quick write up on what I see if I get to explore a cool place. I know how to monitor and test for "black mold" sooooo...maybe you hit upon a good way to get into some cool places happy Friday and hope you all get to explore some cool places this weekend. I shall be laid up in bed zonked on muscle relaxers....ah aging.......tis a byatch

We probably are from the same era. I wish kids today had the kind of freedom we did. As long as we were back for dinner (when the street lights came on) all was right with the world. If we weren't - all they had to do was yell and we heard them and came home. Damn world had to go and get all squirrely with rapists, serial killers and general kookadoos......

thanks for the advice - I forget sometimes that what doesn't bother me (the microbiology angle) can be unsettling for others.

Welcome to UER. There's a lot to see around here. I suggest going to one of the No Exit events if you'd like to meet some other explorers. I don't usually have the time to go anymore though unfortunately.

Its so funny that you mention the No Exit events - I was signed up as YES and I was so excited to go....then my darn back went out and now I spend most of my free time nursing a ruptured disk. I do plan on going to one as soon as my defective and rebellious body decides to cooperate. In the meantime, I would like to get to know some of the people who attend by talking here on the boards. That way I won't be so scared that I'm meeting strangers from the internet and about to have my head lopped off and stored in some wackadoo's freezer

It's not the head in the freezer you need to worry about: http://murderpedia.../g/gein-edward.htm

I literally choked on my tea! OMG - I don't even know HOW you knew something called "Murderpedia" existed! (*putting notes under Peptic's file.....likes murder databases*) OMG - you are a mess! LMAO Necrophiliac eh? fun.........you have to wonder just what went wrong in that person's life. As a microbiologist.....I can't help but wonder about the smell factor involved in necrophilia. That's in addition to the general ICK and REALLY?!? People are "interesting" aren't they? So, I'd like to thank you Peptic Ulcer for that "fun" start to my week! LOL - Happy Monday all!

The internet is a strange and wonderful thing especially for someone like me who has a thirst for knowledge and a short attention span. I have no idea where I learned about this guy but I can assure you "murderpedia" is not on my favorites list! If you want to REALLY be creeped out check out Albert Fish - now THAT guy was twisted. You wondered what made a person do that and its a normal reaction. In his case (like so many others) it was his mother. She was a very religious woman, strict and domineering. His father was an alcoholic who died when he was a teenager and dropped out of school in 7th grade. It was suspected that he killed his older brother and set him on fire so he could be with his mother. Shortly after that his mother died and he was devastated - his whole world crashed around him. Living in complete isolation his interaction with people was extremely limited. All those repressed fantasies were swirling around in his head 24/7 and he became curios. Now how you go from there to making nipple belts from dug up dead bodies is beyond my knowledge but it seems that he was already halfway there. Anyway I relatively harmless. Just ask the severed head in my freezer...
