Ever been locked INSIDE of a location?
< on 12/15/2016 4:31 AM >

Since I have nothing but time on my hands until sometime (hopefully) tomorrow morning when whoever locked me in might actually come back (the property is shared with an active one), I'd like to here y'all's stories about being locked INSIDE of a place. Make me feel less like a dumbass than I already do and help me pass the time.

Hey! While we're at it, will someone tell me PLEASE, how to get rid of that damned Santa clause?? I want to yank out his pixels and stomp on them.

Anyway, I have been locked in three times at three places. Enjoy, but also be sure to conserve your battery power.

The first was a popular rooftop, where there is a door leading to elevators. But the elevators are deactivated for that floor and the door locks automatically behind you. Fortunately giving it a good shoulder gets it open. Months after I was locked in, another friend posted on Facebook she was trapped on a roof in the area and needed help getting free. She got out on her own by the time I made it there 20 minutes later.

Most recently I snuck into a food tent village that was abandoned, and while I was sneaking around whoever had been working there left and locked up behind him. Fortunately all I had to do was jump a seven-foot metal fence, so I made the best of my time knowing I had the run of the place.

Third, I entered a subway vent to get down to the tunnel. On my way up I checked one ventilation room. The door seemed like it wouldn't lock behind me, but it did. Fortunately since I was close to the tunnel I had wi-fi and was able to text an SOS to a friend living nearby. If it weren't for that phone reception I would probably still be down there. My friend lived nearby and had a bike and was familiar with the tunnel system, so he was there before I could finish all my liquor.

This is the room I was in.

Please forgive me, but this is funny.

Now that I think about it, I have been. My local bar in my hometown the day after my 17th birthday. I had way too many 80% alc. shots and passed out under a table. Does this count?

What is the location? Is there any way another explorer in your area could come and rescue you?

Well, im in BFE east Texas, probably not too close to anyone, and even if I was, I'm not sure they could help. There is one way out that I could try to pick open (padlock), but of all the places around here with shitty master locks, this had to be a location where they opted for a decent security lock. I'm really new at picking but I've got all night... what the hell, may as well try!

I have bolt cutters, but I'm not that desperate yet. It's my own fault for letting this happen, I shouldn't destroy their lock because I didn't think this through!

I've been in way worse situations than this. Besides, the place is is freaking huge, I can explore what I missed the first time.

At the risk of my UE cred, I'd probably rather destroy a lock with bolt cutters than be caught locked inside somewhere with bolt cutters. Not that I wouldn't agonise over any other ways out first.

It sounds like your situation is more like my story number 2 -- where I was locked in and knew I could get out another way -- than number 3. But if this person who locked up doesn't come in to work tomorrow and goes home for the holidays, you could be in serious trouble.

No, I can't exactly go to Incheon Airport and board a plane for Texas to get you. But I highly recommend being very specific with your location in case you are down there a long time and lose battery power and contact with the outside world.

Damn, Steed! That last one (and others with stories like it), sends chills down my spine... yikes, and thank god for reception!

I was trapped on top of a mountain once. Google maps had falsely labeled a road as part of the point lobos (California Bay Area) public road system at the top of a mountain. Long story short, I didn't see the gate as it was pushed all the way back into the bushes when I reached the top. I found the road to be impassible and came back, only to find the gate was locked by workers and I had unknowingly trespassed onto private property where a home was being constructed. It was a Friday night, so I had to decide if I wanted to wait atop this mountain until Monday or call for help. The fire department had to bring their only fire engine up that damn mountain and cut the lock in order to get me out. Man, did I feel like a dumbass!

It's a pretty damn good lock... bolt cutters or not, I'm not sure I would even be able to cut it (I won't let myself get caught with the bolt cutters, btw)!

Edited to add: I have a portable battery source.

Unless it's a Mul-T-Lock, I don't believe you.

Yikes! I suggest dropping a pin where you're at and upload a screenshot with specific access info and directions before losing battery.

Always let someone know where you're going and tell them to call for help if not back by a specific time. Also, I always bring in a walkie-talkie and portable battery charger for my phone. Also, I never let doors shut behind me whether I'm in a group or not. I'll even bring door stops or find objects I can pry doors open with so they don't close behind me. Getting trapped is one of my biggest fears while exploring. I even go as far as to bring a can of food and water with me. You just never know what can happen when exploring.

That almost happened to me last time I was in Vermont. I was very low on gas and decided I should take the shorter "road" off the mountain, (to make sure I could reach the nearest gas station) instead of the more familiar way in. Dumb idea.

And thanks Garmin... for telling me that a half eroded, overgrown ATV trail is a "road". I came a hairs width away from disabling my car in the middle of nowhere. And not because of no fuel.

So... What's happened to Dee? Lol
