I'm just wondering what types of content draws readers into posts. Do you enjoy the photography and the pictures of the site the most? Or is the story of the explore the most captivating part. Maybe it's a writeup of the history surrounding the place that interests you most.
My personal favorite part is the story of the explore. There are some fantastic writers and some really captivating stories on this site. I'm always trying to imagine what it would have felt like to be there, and I love to return that feeling by typing up the story of the exploration, even if it wasn't necessarily an intense experience.
I know there's no "one true answer"; everyone's got their own personal preferences. I'm just curious what some of them are.

Pics are great, but what makes a thread memorable to me is when there's a nice write-up to go along with a set.

This site is easy as pie to understand and to become involved with if you only read it and act appropriately.
No one magic formula either.
Danger&coolness&uniqueness sells... bs gets incinerated.

Honestly, the best posts are ones that are both of them combined. Captain Slow wrote up an awesome "how to" for posting threads a while back, should be stickied in the tutorials section.

Both are important but a good writeup is probably not a long one.

I'll skim past a wall of pics, but I'll skim past a wall of text even faster.
Don't upload every image you took, don't upload fifteen angles of the same shot.
If you've got a story to tell too, keep that clear and concise as well.
By all means, find what works for you and do what makes you happy, but I will rarely stick around for a long stretch of either without a good reason.

Sorry, the rookie forum probably wasn't the best place for this. I wasn't asking for help understanding the site, I was just wondering what keeps people coming back

Here's my take.
There are some amazing photographers here that share a dump of their work with a couple of comments. Love the photos, but it generally leaves me wanting more. I also want to read a story about the explore. So not just, "Here's me climbing a ladder" or "That's me on the roof." A story about where you went, what you saw, how it made you feel, and the photos that help us feel like we were actually there with you.
The term photo-journalism would be an overstatement, but photo-story-telling would be about right.
Lastly, the choice doesn't have to be between photo dumps and lengthy stories. A story that tells of the explore along with the corresponding photos won't get boring. Too much narrative or just a dump of photos generally doesn't garner the same reaction as a well written post with pictures.

I find when people write tons of stuff (This isn't just on this forum, other forums I go on as well), they don't format well and it just becomes a massive jumble of text that's off-putting to read, so I prefer having pictorial media instead.

I love pictures and the story of someone's adventure. However, I like the history of a place to be left up to me to find if I choose to explore the same location. For me, that's all part of the fun!
