How important is meeting up to gaining full membership?
< on 10/9/2016 11:40 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER ForumQuote
I've read through the sticky on becoming a full member, and the one requirement I haven't met is exploring with other users. I don't drive though, and in my area that means I might as well be living on the moon. I don't get to explore near as often as I'd like, and it makes meeting up just about impossible.

It's no problem if that's a deal breaker (I really just want access to the DB so I can mark locations on Google Earth for future reference), but I figured it was at least worth asking.

Well that was going to be my next question, since I don't know how. Is there a subforum? Do I PM someone? Anyway, I figured the answer to this thread would decide whether or not I ask.

So much to comment on here but let me just cut to the chase.

You've been a member 6 years, and never read the FAQ?

Of course I have. I've read it many times before and I read it before making this thread, but I still can't see how to actually apply. That part of the FAQ links to Steed's thread, which lists the requirements, but I'm missing how to actually do it.

Edit: Aaaand, I feel stupid. I read everything but the important part. Still the original question applies.

Meeting up will definitely help you out but it's not everything. I didn't meet anyone from UER in person until after I was a full member. As long as you have a history of making quality posts, involving yourself in discussions and generally being a positive addition to the site, you shouldn't have any problems.

Meeting people is important, sure, but it's kind of an "at the mods discretion" kind of thing.

We take all things into account when we grant FM, but the big three are this:
1. Do you contribute to the forums?
2. Have you met people and do you have recommendations?
3. Have you been here long enough for us to catch on if you're a troll/liability or not?

The first one relies a lot on your posts and if you have a solid amount of posts and they're not just one phrase responses like "cool set" or "sweet place", but instead they're actually content worth your time to read then you've got that going for you. Posting a solid amount of your own exploring photos is a good idea. (I haven't looked at your posts so I am just generically stating things at this point) If you have photos of your adventures then we're ore likely to grant FM because you are clearly an explorer.

Meeting people, although not an absolute requirement, is encouraged. I've met most of my best friends from exploring. But what this does is it allows people to vouch for you. Some people don't post all that much and aren't real inclined to do so. Some people don't like posting loads of photos and some people just stay quiet online other than a couple of things here and there. That's okay when a lot of these people end up with like 10 people who are recommending them for FM because they have spent a lot of time with their locals, helping them, exploring with them and overall immersing into their community.

Lastly have you been here long enough. I didn't look at your post history but you have a 6 years star...I think we can safely assume you aren't a trouble maker.

So there's no universal law to getting FM it's more of suggestions for things you should do.

Honestly the worst thing you can do is apply for FM and the mods either grant you FM or they tell you exactly why they aren't granting you FM and that if you accomplish whatever they felt you are lacking then apply in a month or so and get it done.

It's not a science, don't take it so seriously.

Same here; didn't meet with anyone until I had long had my FM.
DOR, it dismays me that after all this time you posted this thread. Why not PM a mod?
While there may be no stupid questions, this site is full of answers if you look. FMs can recommend you for FM. I do this when I come across a member who I feel deserves it.

I use any feedback I can get from other FMs.
When considering a FM candidate the first thing I do is look at their stats and especially their first posts here. I look at the images they post and what they have to say. I look for progression in their images and post content.
One thing I notice with your images is a lot of pics of tags. That's a big red flag for me. I'm sort of on the fence with you because of this and some of your past posts. I've considered putting you up before.

You can meet people here, online, if you simply present yourself properly. That's really all you need to do. That explore, and explore this website. This site is a cake walk, but some make it seem like climbing Mt Everest. I cut my internet teeth here literally... my first PC was in 2004 to download digital photos.

What is it about the graffiti that's concerning to you? Is it a suspicion that I'm doing it myself, or does it indicate that I'm interested because of the tags rather than in spite of them?

This comes across as you're just here to soak up. There are too many users here who post up just to meet the requirements and posting stops as soon as they get their FM but continue to log-in regularly. It doesn't benefit other members when they do this.

I'm not a mod or anything but meeting up is a way of seeing someone gives enough damn to commit to it rather than reserve as "might go" and bail the last minute.

It also weeds out those who only come here to get FM and keeps applying with new accounts to game the system like this.

I wrote the guide on getting FM and I deliberately softened the requirements, primarily so users know what to expect from the system rather than to lower the bar. I got FM without meeting a single UER member, due to being one of maybe two members in Asia at the time. There is a complex formula going through our heads when we evaluate FM applications. It multiplies personal recs, post count, post quality, plus or minus other more intangible factors, all divided by how much of a risk we are taking on the user.

It does seem like many members -- you included -- stay active on the site wwithouttrying to become full members.

I have to admit I understand Blackhawks concern, wondering why you are interested in tags or whether you are a tagger or share information with any. However I am not wondering that seriously. We all have to deal with taggers hiding what they do trying to get information out of us.

Most the tag images aren't uniquely good or keepers, so even if you shot them why post them here?

It seems to be pretty important.

There are no urban exploration events where i live at.

And i'm sure that is the reason why i'm still a basic member.

I am NOT a vandal, I am a photographer.
I take only photos and leave only footprints.

Most of the locations in the location database of this website are on the other side of the world.

I'm 37 years old.
Don't you think i am a bit too old to be a vandal.

I'm still a BASIC member after 15 YEARS!
I had an account here before there even were a FULL member class.

I specifically seek out active members in remote places like Finland and fast-track them for full membership.

What's holding you back is you've only made 19 posts since 2004, and none of them were sharing any work. If you've been waiting for 16 years for full membership before you start exploring, you've wasted your time.

Seems a little old to be throwing a tantrum about basic membership.

Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing.

I think you should ask yourself how important is it to NOT meet someone you don't know during a pandemic and if a forum can respect that decision or hold it against you 🙄
