Urban Exploring Ethnographic Documentary
< on 9/22/2016 6:25 AM >

Hey hey, urban explorers. My team and I are conducting a video ethnographic documentary on urban exploring and the people behind the scenes.

We are looking for several Metro Vancouver participants who are willing to either (1) let us follow them in and around an exploration (2) document their personal philosophies on the subject of EU and private v.s public property (3) participate in a focus group of several like-minded individuals (4) and/or point us in the right direction to cool new locations for us to film and explore (5) can share any video footage that you captured while exploring. Your participation is not limited to these 5 participation options. If you feel uncomfortable meeting in person, or simply are not able to but still want to contribute to this study/documentary, please send an anonymous email to Jstuart@sfu.ca and johnstuart.j@gmail.com

Due to the sensitive matter surrounding ethics and law, all participant's identities, within this documentary, will be fully anonymous and hidden from the film (either by masks or blackened faces. Ironically, Our film crew will also be limited to their involvement of exploring due to trespassing. However, this is not impossible, but a challenge we as the team are working on.

Thank you for your possible interest. We hope to hear from you soon!

Perhaps you could direct us to other material your team has produced?

Hey Blackhawk, any chance you have the name of that documentary? I would like to check it out.

I'll try to be as transparent as possible here.

I personally have no films under my belt. I've done some post audio work in the past (http://themountaintalks.com) but my main experience is within ethnographic research, and music audio production. Mainly my past work has been working with subcultures, like Bronies and rock climbers, for example. If interested I can send you these studies. Film is a new direction for me, and i'm very excited to see what we are able to create. The classic form of research papers and studies on groups of people can become very elites, for those who read it are rarely the people that it can most benefit. Our intention is not to sell this work, but to leave it open source for all to obtain and view.

As for my team.

  • Dillion (camera/ creative director). A sociology ethnographer who has a degree in film and currently works for a production crew (who I cans not recall, Ill get back to you on this detail).

  • Jeremy (actor/ interviewer). An Anthropologist/ live performer

So Dillon and Jeremy have no last names? Thst doesn't seem too transparent to me.

In general explorers here don't like to draw attention themselves and especially to their favorite sites. Once a site goes viral it tends to implode and burn.

You're not the first to try and do this here. Other than documenting us, do you have a sincere interest in UEing and this site?
Or are we just another "study"?

I find a noobies first few posts are very telling.
So please, continue.

That sucks. I see that you have been a long time contributing member to this community, Blackhawk. Maybe i'm doing this all wrong. Any advice as to what direction I should go to get more involved?

I think he just gave you some. Having a sincere interest in the thing, not just the people doing the thing, would probably get you a lot further.

"Subcultures" tend to enjoy talking to people that share their niche interests. I imagine that, attention seekers aside, most people here have little desire to be a lab rat for you.

Read before you post.
Start reading the countless posts and tutorials here. Explore. Find new locations and explore them.
Go to local UE events/meet ups.
Most members are here because they enjoy exploring urban abandonments. I've been doing this since I was a kid.

The Rookies section is intended specifically for new explorers.
If you have a sincere interest in pristine sites you discover you may find you don't share even pictures of it until that site is dust or has been reused. High exposure sites tend to have short life spans due to vandals and scrappers.

No one knows you. Trust is built over time here.
This site has seem it's share of taggers, scrapers, vandals, trolls and ghost hunters.
People pop up here wanting to study and document UE.
Picking our brains isn't urban exploring and the results are predictable. Previous threads here will bear this out.

Blackhawk summed this up well. It could be viewed as one time an interested party walked in and wished to document or study the UE community and the community spat them back out faster than an intern at a cigar club meeting.

As an occasional filmmaker as well as explorer, I think understanding the community and interpreting it to share with others (in the public domain or otherwise) requires a bit of a deeper understanding. Just like as a Caucasian individual I might have a hard time representing black culture in the United States.

The suggestions that you take an interest, get involved and show your grit (and hey, maybe document your learning -- the hard lessons -- a lot of which can be found in plain text in the rookie forum) are likely right on point.

This door won't open on the first knock; the UE community is counting on it.

Good luck.

Thank you Blackhawk and flySparro. I understand, building a rapport in a community a person is strange too is challenging. I'm going to take your advise and approach this through a more practical form of research where my crew and I participate in the community instead of watching it. I agree, this way we might discover our answer we are looking for.

Also, thank you for pointing me in a direction to start, I had no idea the Rookies section existed and I was unsure about those meet ups. I'll go that direction.
