First trip to Gary

Having been to Detroit, several times now, I decided to change it up this trip and head to Gary. Due to time constraints, I was only able to see four locations so the rest will have to wait for next time. All of the places I went are well-known so you probably won't see anything new here but I had a good time and wanted to share anyway.

1. The first place I went was the auditorium. Originally, I was going to start with the train station and work my way around on foot but this was close to where I parked so I went ahead and ducked inside.

2. The auditorium was constructed in 1927 to memorialize fallen soldiers. Many events were held here including graduations for Gary Public Schools. Much of the building was destroyed in the 1997 Gary arsons.

6. After the auditorium, I headed to the train station. It was built in 1910 and closed sometime in the 1950s.

10. This tunnel led to a stairway the took you up to the platform but the stairway has been filled to prevent access.

11. Up next was the church. It was built in 1925 and operated until 1975. It was also damaged in the 1997 arsons and the roof collapsed a few years ago. This was probably why I only got to four locations because I spent so much time here.

24. The final stop for the day was a former high school that opened in 1909 and operated until 1981. Later, the building reopened as a performing arts school but mold that had spread throughout the building forced the performing arts school to move to another location and the building to be closed. It has been abandoned since 2008.

Ah good ol Gary, spent the day out there last week while we were in Chicago for an event. Gotta love how you can just walk around and be surrounded by abandonments.

Scrappers. A bunch of schools have actually lost their windows to them.

Looks like a solid day. I need to go back to that school the next time I'm with someone, last time I went solo and felt sketched the whole time; they found a body there last year.

Yeah, I went by myself and was kind of sketched out too. I moved through it faster than I would have liked because of that and because I was concerned someone would see me through the big, open windows. I wasn't worried about being seen anywhere else but I figured maybe they kept a bit closer eye on this place because of the body. Just out of curiosity, were the no trespassing signs there before they found the body or were they added after? The reason I ask is because I didn't see any on any other buildings.

Thanks! Gary is a fun place and I'm very excited to go back at some point. There's quite a bit more I'm anxious to see.

I was just in Gary again a couple weekends ago. We stopped at all these places and several others. No photos from me, though, as during this trip, i discovered my camera isn't working any longer!

Was there anything in particular that made you feel unsafe? I was there on a Monday afternoon and everything was fine. The only place I felt weird was the school but I think that was the combination of being alone, the knowledge that a body was found there and that the large open windows make it easy to be spotted by passersby if you're not careful.

Weird - I'd say 95% of my trips have been weekends; all-day and walking/train, at that. Never felt sketched by the weather.

Wow! I love the pictures, I have been to Pilson, Pretty close to Gary, A couple of times. But have never been into Gary because I wasn't sure what there was there. Great finds and really cool pictures. That's a sketchy area too so glad you made it out fine.

Never waste a day.

Love Gary. Been twice now, first time was a glorious sunny Sunday afternoon and I felt absolutely fine. Second time was another glorious late summer day and the only place I felt anything approaching uneasy was on the road leading to the screw factory.

Granted I wouldn't want to hang around at night.

There are so many abandoned schools in Gary you are spoiled for choice though, I love them.

If the jackpot is what I'm thinking of, some of it doesn't taste too bad. ;)

I miss Gary. It's been a while (visiting again in a week!) but the place is a gold mine. Crazy looking through pictures of when I first went and comparing them to the state of things now. Methodist without any roofs happened pretty fast...

Do you mean the survival supplies? I saw them but the pictures didn't come out very well, unfortunately.
