Camp 30 (News + 20 Pics)

It has been announced (and approved by city council) that the ownership of Camp 30 POW Camp will soon be transferred to the municipality of Clarington. However, "Before Clarington assumes ownership of the property, the current owners will demolish any buildings that have not been identified for historic preservation and also clean up the area, including removing all graffiti, as well as installing security cameras."

I recently visited Camp 30, and I can tell you that there are already cameras installed on the property (I counted 3 or 4 sets of cameras, see pics below). I was also told by a friendly police officer that, even tho I had walked through an open gate with a sign which said "Welcome" on it (see pic below), that the whole property was private property and I was trespassing. Since he was being kind enough just to give me a warning (and not a ticket), I didn't want to argue too much (even though I'm sure I'm right, and could have probably won in court, I didn't want to push it.) He sped off down the street to talk to other people parked on the street, closer to the buildings (I was at the main gate).

Solar-powered cameras. I'd bet you whoever vandalised that one array probably spray painted the solar cells completely.

We stopped by in May, and were stopped at the side of the road to assess whether or not it's worth a trip in, and had a security guard ask us to park somewhere that he couldn't see us.

Everything there is so, so trashed. I don't know how/what they're planning on saving. My favourite building was always the admin/classroom building but it's long since gone [random story: the admin building was half burnt and that smell just clung to the building, so when I had a house fire last year, that's all I could think of - camp 30 haha].

circa 2010 the place maybe stood a chance:

I'm amused by the fact that they're installing cameras to prevent any further vandalism to a completely vandalized property. I mean, really?

Well, it's like raising a sunken vessel.

If you pump out all the water it'll just fill in again unless you repair the leaks, right?

So the cameras are there to prevent further vandalism once the place has been cleaned up.

Also, I was watching 12 monkeys (the tv series - S02E12) and I recognized some buildings...

The cams appear to be 100% effective...
not one vandal to be seen in any of the images

Was here about a week ago. Two cops were on patrol. They warned us to only stay on the paved walk way or else we would be ticketed. As we walked, we ran in to some friends and they were ticketed ...

This place will be every hard to photograph very soon ...

Reviving an old thread here, but there have been some updates. A number of the buildings have been destroyed including what were labeled as the Science Lab, Library, and Workshop on the map. The security cameras are quite non-functional however they police do pass by often.

The condition of the buildings themselves is extremely low. The owners are constantly playing cat and mouse boarding them up only to have the boards quickly ripped down. Anything nice in the buildings is now largely gone having made way for fire, water, and graffiti damage. Honestly at this point I'm not even sure it is worth going to unless you were already in the area. That might change in the future in the event that Clarington decides that restoration of these buildings would be futile, which I suspect will be the end state here. The sheer cost and requirements to restore these buildings is absurdly high and I have no doubt that Clarington will shift their stance and eventually settle for tearing all the buildings down.

I had really wanted to check this place out, but it just doesn't seem worth it now. Although the vibe it gives off now would be interesting to experience.

No, probably not. Places can get bad with graffiti but I've found that graffiti can often have some weird artistic merit. This place does not. It has "bored teenager from the suburbs" with a spray can all over it. The buildings are destroyed to a state that I have rarely seen outside of being the result of an actual demolition or the force of mother nature.

I'd agree that the vast majority of pieces and tags in Camp 30 have no artistic merit when taken in individually, but if you take in the totality of all the pieces as a whole it is reminiscent of a Jackson Pollock painting; it's sublime in my opinion. Reminds me of humanity in a way; individually there are some real winners out there, along with some crude and creepy souls, though most people are nothing special; however, taken as a whole humanity is far from monotonous and quite impressive.
