Recalls

so visited two dealers this week for two different recalls, took the B4000 in to mazda for the airbag recall. I was shocked at the shit ass job they did on my dash got down the street and the dashpad over the airbag fell off... they are ordering a new cover.

meanwhile they go "oh you have a stuck caliper so you need a new caliper, rotors and bearings... 1900$" whole job cost me 300$ in my driveway, just curious went to the local ford dealer to get an estimate on the brakes for fun. ford dealer (also using motorcraft parts like the mazda dealer, they quoted 700$)

meanwhile took the grand prix in for the engine fire recall, all it seems they did was replace my valve cover that was aluminium with a plastic one.

while they had my car at the dealer, I asked my tame parts guy about a brake job for the Cruze... the car does have 93k miles on the factory pads and rotors... $335 parts & labor... um... really?

Les Schwab, one of the big tire/brake/suspension shops here in the west, when I was looking at tires with them, I asked maybe if they could do a deal with brakes if I had the tires off, they could give me a deal on brakes since I was due. I usually have a good rapport with the chain so,

Now before I give you the number they quoted me, I know from experience and their policy that their basic brake service includes new pads and calipers and rotor turning plus topping off brake fluid and bleeding, which they do quote a flat rate upfront regardless of work time on.

The quote was $1103...now why do you ask? Okay, they were going to charge me $275 for the stated above which is a good deal, but however, they highly recommended that I replace my rotors; they are not separate but instead apart of the wheel hub, they need to pulled out and well, while you are in there, you should repack the bearings with new ones because they have the hub out. So that added 700 more dollars just because.

I found out from the previous ownwer, the SAR team I am a member of, thru our quartermaster, the bearings were replaced in 2009, so I'm good for a while. The rotors have a few grinding lines on them, but nothing to worry about. So I'll do my own brake job...

I would say idiots, I have a high end car with brakes to slow down that 550HP, I was well aware of maintenance costs when I bought it, and since I do it all myself and have cost pricing it helps.

May I ask what kind of car it is?

so why would you bother with an F plate if you are a small dealer, just stick your X on whatever car you feel like using, saves you the dealings with the SAAQ.

Because revenue QUÉBEC gets angry when you don't have a plated car, and can't cross the border with an X plate. And people always fkn steal
The plates of you leave them unattended

He's right about the X-plates not being able to cross into the US...

The reason WHY is that unlike say a dealer plate in the rest of Canada or the US, Quebec treats them more like a trip permit and can be only searched by law enforcement internally in Quebec...

As for his choice of brakes...well, for that price, I better have air brakes...

I remember one of the NYSP Troopers telling me that dealer plates are the most stolen kind of plates because they aren't tied to any specific vehicle.
