That's unfortunate, a friend was planning on going up there soon.

The fire isn't anything special - in Cheney which may as well be demoed at this point. Nothing touched the kirk.

The kirk was already damaged from a previous fire though, wasn't it? I couldn't get too close when I was there last because of security poking around it, but it looked to be in pretty bad shape.

Male ward was burned, probably 7 or 8 years ago? maybe more. It was in bad shape at the time but it was all natural decay and was in my opinion 10 times as beautiful as female wing. Last time I was there the very far end of Male was still accessible if your willing to go thru a whole bunch of rubble. Its been 5 or 6 years tho and we all know how quick that can change. Edit- actually, the photo above seems to be taken from the area I was talking about. The club house was still there to but was VERY crispy.

Such a shame to see pieces of history being destroyed in such a manner. The reason why people commit arson is one thing I don't think I'll ever be able to understand. At least the Kirk wasn't harmed any further. The building that burned is one of the ones set to be demo'd, right?

I've wanted to go up for some time but have stayed away. As people above have said it isn't easy to get into. It opens and closes periodically. And much attention has been brought to it recently. Such a shame.

It's one of the staff houses and not the Kirk itself.

And so it begins, they started the demolition... TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y., July 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- It has been more than 15 years since the site of the former Hudson River State Hospital closed its doors. Today, state, county and local officials joined executives from EFG/DRA Heritage LLC., a joint venture between the EnviroFinance Group and Diversified Realty Advisors, to kick off the redevelopment of the former hospital site with the first demolition of buildings. Hudson Heritage is a $250 million redevelopment project that will transform the long-dormant state hospital property into a planned mixed-use community, consisting of 750 residential units including multifamily apartments, townhomes, and detached single-family homes with 350,000 ft2 of neighborhood retail and approximately 80,000 ft2 of hotel/hospitality space. The project will feature preservation and adaptive reuse of key structures of Hudson River State Hospital – transforming the site into a vibrant new community located on the original 156-acre property in the Town of Poughkeepsie, New York.

All that's gone down are the staff houses so far.

YoBuffy and I got in yesterday. If you go after 630 its still worth the trip. There were a couple of construction workers dangling their feet of Cheney too.

I have never been to the grounds before, but have done my fair of research of where to park, where not to go, what's accessible, etc. Is it worth the 6 1/2 drive? How close are you 'legally' allowed to get? I just want to see it in person before it's too late. I am off next weekend, and feel that it's the only time I would be able to do it, followed by spending the next day in NYC. Thoughts? What's security like now? Sounds like people are still getting in fairly easy.
