Last Free Place On Earth

Slab City and East Jesus. A Commune in the middle of the desert east of the Salton Sea. There is no law, and claims itself as being the "Last free place on earth". There's also a lot of hippie art there. While these may not be abandonments, it is quite different than what is in the rest of the world, so figured I'd share this urban outback exploration.

Enjoy.

Wow, this is cool! However you took the pictures makes it almost look fake! For the first five minutes of looking through you pictures some looked like really good cgi.

It's a good 45/50 minutes from the closest "town" and that town is about 70% abandoned (as most of the Salton Sea is) and the residents are living out of old trailers and run down homes. So for a solid civilization, I'd say further than that lol.

I did a slight bit of HDR which is probably the effect you're mentioning.

Thanks for the replies guys. It's a really interesting place.

Always good to see photos from here! Nice shots!
My buddy actually lived in Slab City for a while. He has come back since then, so he has some quite interesting stories!

I'm gonna guess you're using Photomatix or HDR Efex. If you want a more natural look, try LR/Enfuse or Photoshop's built-in HDR Pro. I'm not saying your photos need it, merely a suggestion for other options.

I'll have to check those programs out. I'm currently using Photomatix Pro along with Topaz Adjust. It's a great program and was rated one of the top editors for HDR. However, it's all down to the settings I chose when I manipulated the image. But thanks, I'll have to look into those.
