Are they not patrolling it as hard as they used to? I went there circa 2011/12 and there was constant vigilant security vehicles driving around.

What started as a recon mission ended up as a full blown explore and climb. We made a sweep of the barracks, visited the boiler house, then made a mad dash up the crane.

This was quite a good trip. I'm not sure if it was a lucky day or what, but the place was a ghost town. No patrols, and little activity in the active buildings on site. I'm quite excited for a return, as we covered nowhere close to half of the area. Here are some color & B&W 35mm shots.

10. The true gem of the shipyard, the one & only gantry crane. This tough cookie stands at a whopping 450 feet, making it about 145 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty. If your aim is to climb those rusty ladders to the very top, your limbs will be angry.

15. The light that still fills the night sky with a red hue to this day.
16. Obviously that Secret Santa character was a troll, but that spot that "Must have not been that great" is actually the very top of the crane, which provides a nice view of not only the shipyard, but the downtown skyline & the Sutro Tower. There is also a small room located at the top which you can climb down into.

18. Managed to capture what looks like an image straight out of a history textbook.

Oh how this was a fun trip. I wish I had been able to climb the barracks like you guys, but I was legitimately on the area due to some connections, and I didn't want to test my luck or burn any bridges.
The area is not radioactive aside from buried gauges they keep finding, the drydock tunnels and some of the soil, from what I understand now. It's more about toxicity. Oh, and the barges there still have a lot of a chance for contamination on them from radionuclides.
The pictures taken from up high in that building are former barracks. Enlisted barracks, I believe, with one of the major dumps right behind it and also the area where the old massive radar reflector was, right across from what used to be Candlestick park.
There is so much history and that site. You can still see markings for the USS Indianapolis on one of the old machine shop buildings near the electronic warfare testing building.

This was my first time urban exploring, and I must say, this is an incredible place. Went here a little while back and loved it. My friend and I went to both the old army barracks and ended up climbing the crane. Security seemed to be pretty lax, with the occasional car going down the main roads. The cars stay on the main roads and go in a circle throughout the site. It generally takes about 15-25 minutes for the same car to cycle through the site. We also noticed that the guards seem to switch shifts at the guard booths at approximately 7:00am.

For those of you wondering about the risk:
We got spotted as we were leaving, and were informed that we were trespassing. Played it off as lost tourists (we had cameras), and were told that if we had been caught further into the site, they would have called the police. Not sure how big the risk is, being unfamiliar with California's trespass laws, but the guards seemed pretty lax and let us off with a warning.
(this is my first post so let me know if something's wrong)

Great first post you got there! You chose quite the risky spot for your first explore, but I’m glad you had a good time. I figured that they would be pretty strict about ex-military sites, but you’re the 2nd person on this thread that was let off with a warning. I suppose you can just be glad you weren’t spotted on top of the crane (I don’t think you’ll get away with the lost tourist card at that point, hahah). I believe the worst you can get in CA for trespassing is a misdemeanor, but don’t quote me on that. Anywho, don’t let getting caught deter your explorative urges!! We’be all been there. PS: how did you like that climb?
