Also, everyone on here is right, it is a great idea to be polite to whoever stops you for exploring. I will say that I always try to be polite to everyone, even if they are being rude. It's hard but doable.

I disagree about being polite when caught, although it might differ across cultures (cops here don't shoot people).

Whenever cops confront me, whether it's for a traffic offence or on suspicion of trespassing, I first act like I can't speak their language, and I also try to act like they're my disappointing servants. "Why did you stop me? I can be here if I want. I don't have to show you my ID. What did I do wrong? What law did I violate?" I don't do this with security or any other person who confronts me, just cops. I also will cooperate with the police, eventually, but I'm going to make them work for it.

One time a group of us were caught in an abandoned hospital, and one off my friends kept doing these weird guilty-sounding whimpering noises and gestures which I think he picked up in Japan. I had to tell him to play it cool or the cops would be really suspicious of us.

That's true that sometimes we can't always be polite when the police aren't being nice to start with. Trust me, I've had it happen (LOL).
