So sorry to hear of you not being able to return to work Sam/Scott.

But, your health and safety must come first now...even over your willingness to get back to the grind.

My thoughts are with you and I hope you try to stay calm and keep your spirits up. Take care guy !!

I found out that I could've filed disability when they first found out my heart was screwed. At 15% capacity, there is no argument. My conversation with the cardiologist went on for over 40 minutes. He did not anticipate any trouble with getting disability. What chaps my ass is I have spent 20 years working, trying to do everything, get my credit rating up, basically do what's expected and now all that is going to be blown away by something I cannot control. It's just unbelievable.

Not to worry about credit rating. You can always file for bankruptcy if need be. Your rating will eventually recover.

The SSI benefits are the ticket. That you're are fast tracked is great. File for it now, DO NOT delay!!!
Yeah heart failure is not something someone in their 30s or 40s would even think about. I hate surprises.
Meh, shit happens... you're still twitching and bitching

Sell the car to a friend for a dollar just to get it in thier name. They let you keep it as long as you need than sell it back to you for that same dollar.

Under bankruptcy laws you keep your house, car(within a certain value), and most if not all of your possessions. It's designed to give folks like you a fresh start because sometimes bad things happen to good people. Talk to at least 2 good lawyers that specialize in bankruptcy. The consultation should be free. It's not as simple as it used to be, but doable.
Do that -now-. Waiting will lose you more money with the same end result except you'll be worse off. Been there, done that
Know your rights and think of it as a business. It's not unethical nor is it a moral judgement, simply business.

Creditors can not glean your SSI checks

A friend of mine who is on disability says claims are almost always rejected the first time. Have the doc submit it again. I think the first rejection is an attempt to weed out the freeloaders (maybe it works, maybe it doesn't). Also, bankruptcy isn't a bad idea. Yes, you'll keep your car. Most people get out of bankruptcy by working, and it's hard to work without a car. The problem is, bankruptcy takes time and money. It also wouldn't hurt to talk to your boss and see if they have a desk job you can take. The fact that you want to work speaks volumes about your character.

Samurai,

May the way of the warrior guide you well. . .

I myself have had 3 open heart surgeries. . . and have been on the fence for having another one the last 8 years. . . Being on the fence sucks. But Not having any options though probably sucks worse i'd imagine.

I have been on Medicaid or the free state insurance system for a long time now and in 3 different states. As you don't make any money now it should be fairly easy for you to get on as well. There is hassle sometimes but every state is different. I have had free cardiologist exams, appointments, and minor procedures all on the state health system.

Anyways Samurai, be well

been a flurry of paperwork these past couple of days. Had to track down why I have not been getting temp disability checks. Paperwork wasn't being sent/delivered. I also broke the news to my employer that I would not be coming back. What was funny is that as much as I hate my job, I was apologetic at not returning. I miss not so much the job, but some of the maniacal bastards I work with. There are some genuinely talented and funny people that work there and I miss them, miss the interaction with them and sometimes miss being pissed off at my job. It's probably some weird masochistic need I might have.

So sent to the company handling my 401k for a hardship withdrawal. There was $22k left in the account so after taxes, I should have enough to pay the Chevy off, or at least close enough where I can either trade it for something lower priced that I can afford on a fixed income, or sell it outright should it come to that. The car has 88k miles on it and traditionally, the finance company I have been with since 2001 would rather work with you than snatch the car. Yay me.

Other than that, I keep plugging along... Stress test in April followed by the ever popular sleep study. I have apnea and the doctors think that is a big part of why my heart has been on a rocket sled slide into failure. So, again, thank you for all your generosity and concern. I can't really convey how much it means to me. Seriously. This is one of the best groups of people I have had the fortune of knowing. Thank you.

Thanks. Each day it gets a bit worse. Hard to explain what it feels like, but its exciting, like waiting for a bomb to go off. When the defibrillator in my chest goes off, that's when the fun begins (or ends depending on your point of view)

More to come...

It ain't the 4th yet big guy...
Hoping the CPAP will help. Until then try sleeping on your side or turning your head to the side so your airway doesn't collapse. That may or may not work. The head tilt thing will become a habit after about a week. I use that trick.

From one Scott to another: you're one of the main reasons I keep coming back. If I had a heart to give you, I would. (Well, I do have hearts, but they're in buckets of formaldehyde.)

What Skelly wrote.

I've read the entire thread, B'Hawk has some good words for you to read. Look ahead, write down the doctors day plan for your health, and the day plan for your finances. Stick to both. Make notes of everything until you've stablized your health and finances.

Hang in there! Let's hope the doc can help strengthen your heart a bit at a time. Apnea is an issue....maybe get yourself a comfy recliner to sleep in.

Hello all! I went for a stress test on Friday... it went ok. The preliminary data obtained is better than the doctor hoped for. He and my primary cardiologist think they may have a way now to treat it. I go for a sleep study next, probably in May.
We'll see where this goes...
