Spiral into Obscurity

This 2 storey Flemish brick building was built as a hotel in 1858 by Thomas Bredin, & from 1874 to 1973, was the home of the John Allingham Watson family. Although inhabited as late as 2007, it now stands majestic and empty.

Behind the house, there is a tiny apartment that appears to have been pretty much trashed. The main house stands in complete contrast, with no graffiti, and in reasonably good condition. This is not surprising, given that the property is listed as a "property of significance" by the Town of Whitby, and was, for a time, included in the Heritage Register. One very unusual feature is an exterior spiral staircase leading up to the 2nd floor.

The interior has an interesting and spacious layout, featuring a living space that is one step up on the second floor, and a finished attic complete with lighting, a post & chain barrier around the top of the stairs, and artistic wallpaper.

This one is worth the visit, but is in a busy area. Caution is advised.1.

Interesting. That attic has some interesting wallpaper, what is it exactly?

It's similar to a mosaic design.
