Duran sanatorium

My visit to the abandoned Duran sanatorium in Costa Rica was by far the most anticipated part of my trip and I thought I could share some of my pictures with the members of this forum.

The buildings are now open to the public despite their state of disrepair, and they can be visited for a small fee. It is not a guided tour so you can go pretty much anywhere. The maintenance seems to be very minimal, and mostly focused on the landscaping around the abandoned buildings. Some structures, such as the former men's pavilion, are in ruins while others still have boarded up windows. Most building are empty yet they retain their past splendor in the form of beautiful tilework or other architectural details.

I don't know much about the history of the sanatorium other than it is a hot spot for local ghost hunters with their it-is-abandoned-therefore-it-is-haunted logic...I know it opened in 1918 and closed down around 1963. At its peak, it could accomodate up to 300 patients. The cemetery where patients were buried is located about 2km away, but I didn't know about it until recently.

There is very little information available in English on the internet, and most of the websites only seem to focus on the ghost stories surrounding the old sanatorium...

Thanks for the comments, guys! I am glad you enjoyed the pics.

Blackhawk, that last picture is some kind of passageway that used to connect the bakery and what I believe was the kitchen (not 100% sure.) Those railings and columns are very pretty...definitely my favorite room! The stucco on the walls bore traces of smoke as if there had been a fire a long time ago...
