Danvers State Hospital - a brief visit
entry by Slim Jim

This will be brief, because there is plenty of information on Danvers out on the web. After Didley-Boo and I came back from NEOPEX, Montreal, and hiking in Maine, we visited Danvers with Mike Dijital and a large group of people. As we were expecting, the place was incredible. The Kirkbride (main building) had 3 1/2 wings on each side of the central admin part, the few other Kirkbrides that I had seen only had 2 on each side. Some of the floors were missing in the rooms, but most of the hallways were OK and all of the stairs we saw were safe.

It turned out that about 15 people showed up that night. That was quite a group for an abandoned place with security. At one point, most of the group was up on the roof when security spotted us. They turned their lights on, backed up, and shined the spotlight around the building. But they didn't do anything about it. Later, when we were on top of the main tower, security spotted us again. "Hey, I'm gonna call the cops," the guard rambled, but he was staggering around drunk! Not only that, but he was driving his little car around the building drunk. Wonder what the cops would've done if they were called. This guy would be in trouble.

We explored the rest of the building, which was full of interesting corners. Each of the 6-8 wings looked pretty much alike, but the passageways between them were interesting and each wing presented a different and unique scene of decay. In the basement, there was a steam tunnel with a row of limp plastic arms with latex gloves on the end of them. This would be incredibly creepy if we didn't know what it was, but our guides explained that it was from when they shot Session 9 there. Now I really want to see the movie, since most of the locations in it will probably be familiar.

----------------------

The East Coast is a lot of fun, and has an unbelievable number and density of abandoned asylums. The whole trip (NEOPEX, upstate NY, Montreal, Maine, and Danvers) was a great time and full of adventures. I'll be back to see more, hopefully next summer if not sooner.

The End.
