Subway Station

Through networking I met up with someone who hooked me up with this spot. What a trip.

First I had to hop a fence and scale a slippery hill (covered in leaves and hobo trash). At the bottom of the hill were live tracks with a third rail. Nothx.jpg. So I continued along the side of the hill. Eventually I met with the bottom of the stairs and from there found my way to the station itself.

After exploring the station proper (both platforms), I noticed a hole in the ground. I peaked down and it seemed to go somewhere. I lowered myself in and found that someone had been living underneath the foundation of the station. There were stalactites up to 1.5ft long.

From there I continued down a long wall that was crushed in graffiti. Along the way I found two abandoned train cars - one box car, and one "house car."

The box car was pretty generic and mostly empty. The "house car" was something I had never seen before: it was like a trailer home / RV mounted on a rail-car chassis. After hoisting myself up, I discovered it had two bedrooms, one bathroom and a kitchen.

The entire spot was located underground so noise and vibrations from the cars above traveled down into the train car. Also there was wind from a nearby body of water. Being inside the "house car" was extremely spooky - the vibrations from above, and the wind made sure that every inch of every wall was constantly vibrating, rattling and buzzing. It was unsettling to say the least.

Overall though, this is my first 'real' spot after having moved to NYC from California, and I'm glad I got to check it out.

That's one of the last remnants of the Ninth Ave El.

Train service ended in 1958.

The tunnels were walled up about 15 years ago.

The tunnel used to continue to an above-ground station before joining an elevated subway line to the East of the station.

Wow, that's really cool, I'm glad you shared the info on this place. I didn't really know anything about it other than the location. That first pic is cool, it has a building in the background that's now coated in graffiti. Cool to see the difference.

Thanks for sharing. That's Sedgewick Ave. station of New York City's 9th Ave. El, abandoned Aug. 31, 1958, after the baseball Giants left the Polo Grounds for San Francisco. Anderson - Jerome Aves. station is at the other4 end of the tunnel. The walls are periodically broken through and then resealed. Plenty of other Internet sites will have older photos and history.

The house trailer on a flat car is where railroad track and wreck repair employees live while working in the wilderness far from motels, now that old Pullman sleeping cars are hard to find. The box car next to it with a man door in the end may have held tools.

very cool

those railcars are MOW cars used for maintaining rail lines, actually the red railcar is a vintage troop sleeper MOW conversion.
