Six people from Seattle and Portland converged at an amazing place. We visited it for two days, overnighting at two sleepy little towns nearby. The Seattle group had picked out some other sites to visit along the way. These didn't pan out; still we really enjoyed the main event.
This thread will probably get picture-heavy, and I want to encourage the rest of the group to post their shots. So here's a small sample of what we saw.

Thanks Ganesha. I was quite pleased with a lot of the pictures in my set. The afternoon light was especially kind. Thanks for setting the whole thing up.

Yes the morning light was quite beautiful actually and made a lot of my pictures turn out really well. Good call on that one

This place was a blast, and when it came time to drive home on the second day, part of me didn't want to leave. I wish I lived closer; it's the kind of site I could visit over and over again.
The first day we were there, two of us were down near the road when a local pulled up in a car and asked us what we were doing. When we told him we were interested in the historical aspects of the site, he enthusiastically shared a bit of its history with us, wished us a good visit, and drove off. He also told me how to get onto the roof, which was cool. I probably would've managed it by myself anyway, but it was nice to have a friendly encounter with someone who obviously had his own appreciation for the location.

Yeah those last few were really good, thanks for posting more.
At first I thought this looked mediocre, almost too ruined and open to be interesting, but the more I look at the pics it does look really pretty cool. Now I'm sorry I didn't know about the event, I got into a theme park frenzy this summer and spent all my time planning/going to ride roller coasters and forgot about UER a bit. Hope I can make it to something in the future.

Looks like there were originally three smokestacks and one was taken down. I wonder where it used to stand?

I should have prefaced this thread with an explanation about why the trip wasn't announced in advance. Your frustration is understandable, and I apologize for causing it.
A few of us who knew each other planned the trip. We discussed whether to make it a public event. But none of us had ever been to the site; we didn't know what security there might be; and the latest gallery in the LDB was labeled "Pre-demolition." We couldn't find any recent information about it online. I did find out that a Utahan developer had a harebrained scheme to turn it into a resort; and that four windfarms were scheduled to be built somewhere in the county that owns most of the site. We were willing to risk two days of driving and a motel bill for no return, but we didn't think such a flop would go over very well as a public event.
Now that we know how things stand, I've no doubt that there will be public explores, and of course that individuals will continue to enjoy the place. Always keeping in mind that the lifespan of any abandoned site is unknowable and liable to end abruptly.

In between bouts of defending my half of the back seat of Dad's Impala from my brother, I might have set down my Etch-A-Sketch and my Superman comic book long enough to peer over the car's giant tail-fins and glimpse that scene. Thanks!
