As dumb as this is, how many people here can honestly say they never did anything stupid as a teenager? It's really sad to someone's life end because of those dumb decisions that if they lived past they would have looked back on and said 'man I was dumb when I was a kid'.

Yes, but how many of us can say that dumb thing was hanging by 1 arm off a 9 floor building? That's probably because the people who do that kind of thing tend not to last long. Seriously, what did he expect? Never to make a mistake? Is it sad, yes. Am I sympathetic? Not particularly.

So uhhhh...did anyone get his last picture?

I doubt you comment lol that guy crashed and burned when a motorcycle stunt ride goes wrong. It doesn't make it dumb because it's not monetized. There are many other activities that are equally pointless or meaningful depending on your point of view. Just to name a few dangerous activities: ice climbing, mountaineering, free climbing, boxing and bull riding.

Fair enough, Risk is a subjective factor and each person analyzes it differently. Each activity has its risks and rewards, often including death as a risk. Based on my analysis of his actions, there's a very low payout for the risk given, and therefore brings any number of adjectives to mind, ranging from ballsy to stupid. On the flip side, at least he died doing something he evidently loved. I must say though, there are much safer yet just as thrilling ways to enjoy life and adrenaline, so hanging off of buildings for the sole purpose of taking cool pictures seems a rather unnecessary task, possibly (but not definitely) just done for attention. IF that was the case, then he was unquestionably dumb.

Adding validity to the probability that it was for attention/self importance. EDIT: added cosmic's quote.

There's also a wikipedia page about Selfie related injuries and deaths.
This one doesn't look like it's been added yet

The fact of the matter is everyone here does stupid shit. There is something not normal with people who wake up in the morning and go out to (in many cases) risk: 1. Arrest 2. Bodily injury 3. Getting shot 4. Asbestos 5. Getting robbed 6. Getting beaten 7. Getting raped The list goes on and on. Although this kid was probably just a testosterone filled 18 year old with an overinflated sense of ego, he did share one thing with most of us - the thrill of being there. I'm reasonably certain he lacked most members sense of intellectual curiosity about the locations and for him it was just an egomaniacal stunt meant to build up his own sense of self worth. I'm also certain that this is the source of most people's derision of his actions. As far as his dying doing what he loves I'm pretty sure that wasn't what he was thinking as he was plummeting to his death. I hope that in that short time all perception slowed for him. In his minds eye he saw his family members, maybe a cherished moment with a special girl and a singularity occurred. That perfect moment of complete clarity a fraction of a second before he hit the ground - "Holy shit I'm a fuckin dumbass!" SPLAT!

Doesn't it have to be him taking the picture for it to count as a selfie? Also I don't see it as that big of an "omg look what he did" kind of thing.. I know that I have done some sketchy stuff exploring, that could've easily ended with me being in an article just like this being like "omg look at this girl walking on floors that are obviously water damaged and could collapse at any minute" Come on guys, we do the same shit. People live for thrills, we all have our kicks. I don't think he was stupid, just reckless.
You're not weird if you're not normal. |

And the risk level one's willing to accept. Being a young male has a lot to do with it and it's no coincidence that single males under 25 have the highest auto insurance premium. You can name exceptions but someone with a family and children have generally refrain from highest risk activities like motorcycle racing and extreme UE.
"Two young men died in the Ural mountains as they pulled the pin from a hand grenade to take a selfie, which remained as evidence of the circumstances of their deaths" Now, that is stupid.

I've seen photos of members here that were equally or more dangerous than what this kid was doing. Most people here risk their lives among other things (see peptic's list) on explores. The only difference is most of the people here are old enough to know better :p
|
|
I hate everything about selfies, but I think I'm just too old to understand it. As for risks, I'm mostly grown up and still take some risks. Especially when exploring. They're calculated risks, but still risks. A young man's calculator works a lot differently than an old man's and arguably not nearly as well. When I see "selfie" "nine stories" and "one arm " my memtal calculator kicks out MORON. I know it's insensitive and I truly feel bad for the kid and his loved ones. Even as a kid this would have seemed idiotic to me and I actually have ridden bulls before. There are better ways to get attention.
