Abandoned Power Plant

Recently a few of my friends decided to take a road trip up to the Northeast (we're from the DC area). Thanks to all the traffic is took about four hours to get there but my god was it worth it. When we first attempted to gain access we almost decided not to because we noticed security cameras kinda sorta facing the building. We ended up finding another way in with no (visible) cameras and made our entrance.

This power plant was originally constructed in the 1920s and it's primary use was to generate power for the northern part of the city. The power plant has a total of four large generators, a building to control where the power was distributed, and a large turbine hall. This power plant had the ability to boil up to 50,000 gallons of water per hour, which was eventually turned into power. Unfortunately, due to more efficient ways of producing power this plant was shut down permanently in the early 1980s.

Although this plant is abandoned, several high budget movies have used this location for scenes. Sorry but I'm not going to name drop the movies. I hope you enjoy the set!!

I believe that this is the building where they controlled where the power was distributed. Anyone have any knowledge on this?

I'm not really sure what this is. If I had to guess a water turbine? That's me in the photo btw.

Nice work. That place can sometimes be pretty tricky. That structure in the second photo is what most people refer to as a "coal tower". It is where coal would be removed from a ship and transported into the power plant.
The thing in #11 is right under the turbine. It would be where the steam is condensed back into water to be sent into the boiler. Like a cooling chamber i believe.

I appreciate it man! Thanks for the info! I figured the building in the second photo was used for picking up something off the water due to the cranes but I wasn't positive. Have you been here? What makes it tricky if you don't mind me asking? The only thing I was really sketched out about was the business next door and the security cameras

Its hit or miss. It will be easy some days and then impossible others. Depends on whether or not the guard is there.

nice shots. This place has been on my list for a while. Like others have said, can be hit or miss, as sometimes there's security sitting by the POE (at least the previous ones).'

Most photos I've seen of #11, there's a ton of standing water around it. Makes for nice reflection shots

It's very possible that the guard was there and we just didn't come across him. At one point in the coal tower we could have sworn we heard someone but we figured it was an explorer/scrapper.

Thanks! You should really check it out because this place was hands down the coolest explore I've ever been on. I think I saw the security building you're referring to but it was empty and there were no cars on the property. I guess that I got lucky.

There was a lot of standing water but my dumb ass didn't take advantage of it. I've seen some of the photos you're talking about and they're fucking breathtaking.

Thanks a lot Punchy! I'm definitely stoked that we chose this place because words can't even describe how incredible it was. The other spot is next on my to do list and I'm excited to see it! I just need to find a ride out there.

Nice set! This place is great, one of my favorites. Unfortunately the day we went was literally the coldest day this year (8 degrees I think?).

Pic #2 is the coal tower.

Ships loaded with coal would dock on either side and they would be unloaded by crane. The black structures off both sides of the tower were what the crane gantry traveled on. they would dump the coal into a bin and the very long conveyor belt would bring the coal into the plant and dump it into hoppers to be used a fuel to create steam to run the turbines.

a very elementary explanation:

Thanks dude! Any chance you'd be willing to share some of the photos you took (if you took any)? It sucks you went on a cold day but at least you weren't sweating your balls off the whole time like we were lol

I posted a set awhile back I will find them, but there was like 50mph winds too which made for a very sketchy adventure cause chunks of the roof kept dropping!
