Visited Angel Island recently, after reading up on all the old wartime stuff there. Definitely need to get back there one of these days, but went through a good chunk of Fort McDowell and some other stuff on the island. Lot of it was mostly emptied, lot more of it was pretty structurally unsound and falling apart...but still cool!
Separate note, I need to visit SF again if only for the rooftopping opportunities. So much old architecture and exterior fire escape work...wish I'd had more time in the city proper.

Always wanted to head out there -- what is security like out there and are most buildings just open or closed/fenced off?

Decrepitude attempted a meetup/convention a few years back and said security was tight and that one of the guys even followed the group around for much of the day

Weird, didn't see any kind of security besides a car or two with a couple local authorities driving around, and that was only during the warmer hours. They didn't even go close to the buildings (besides driving by them). Maybe I just got lucky? Granted, I was dressed/packed more like a backpacker since I was camping.

I had the same experience, just a single car driving around the island it seemed. Waited for him to pass by and that was about it. At night I don't think I saw anybody at all...

My son and I showed up a week early for Decrepitude's gathering by accident. It worked out to our advantage. There's a thread around here somewhere. Probably full-members only. (?)

Ooooh, now this I missed...is this what's under thsoe rusted/bolted shut silo doors I came across? Maybe I should've explored that area more, eh? Next time...
