Hearing stories of this place from older family members was what first sparked my interest in this whole activity. I've done some research and have come to understand that very little remains inside, and that the city has gone to great lengths to seal it up. The heavy locks, welded bolts, and stories of a removed ventilation system speak of these efforts. Regardless of these facts, the very existence of this submerged, single floor, 10x13 meter box fascinates me. Does anyone know anymore about this place?

I think I'm drooling a little. Damn! I've heard tell of an "emergency exit" somewhere in the ravine. Do you know if this refers to the tunnel just south of the hut, or another, more mysterious entrance? Also, any info regarding the nearby manhole would be appreciated.

Its south going into off into the slope and it was sealed shut when I was there. The residents also keep a close eye on the building too.

It remains very much sealed, though it looks like someone attempted some prying. So that's the emergency exit then? Damn, I was hoping for some sort of secret option C. I did however find reference to a temporary shelter built a year earlier than this one. This shelter was to be relied on if shit hit the fan during the construction of the main one. It's in a nearby commercial building that appears to still be in use. I can't find any reference to it's removal, perhaps it remains?

Those are the best photos I've ever seen of that bunker. Thanks for the link. The second bunker is probably still there, although it might be used as basement space in that commercial building (never saw inside it).

So based on the small size & design, it wasn't really a shelter, but more so an emergency operations center type of protected place for Edmonton key officials + civil defense staff to re-locate to during an emergency situation & use telephones & radios to gather information, make decisions, and direct emergency responders from. As-such, there are probably old articles & photos of it in operation back in the day to be found in city & area newspaper archives.
The above is all just educated speculation -- I've never been to Alberta...

Agreed until these I'd only ever seen yours. Best I have is an exterior.

Still looking for info on this? I have a contact who had direct access to this site (last time I checked, anyhow). He's also been in before, so if there are any questions, send them my way! I've done a bit of research on the site myself (as well as the second, lesser-known bunker further up the road), so hopefully I can be of help as well!

At this point I've pretty much back-burnered this location. Maybe in the future it will be more accessible by unconventional means.

Holy fuck, sweet
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in. | |
I actually got in touch with the photographer who got inside, and met him at the shelter one day a few years back to get what info I could from him. Turns out, his trip in inspired him to start the Civil Defense Museum and Archives, initially in an attempt to acquire and preserve the bunkers (there's actually two, a second is in the basement of another building nearby), and eventually turned into him acquiring the Alsask Radar Station, which has become the new base for the museum. Rambling aside, I could contact him for more info if need be, or get you in touch with him. He's a wealth of knowledge on the subject. EDIT: Saw I posted a reply to this before haha
