What can you do as a Rookie?

Hey guys, name's Sam! I've learned from you guys that climbing radio towers is dangerous, whether it be AM towers, FM towers, cell towers, anything, I thought it's best to stay away from them. Sadly where I'm from there's not many cranes and much tall construction going on. The city is also really spread out, so looking for things is quite difficult. What do you guys suggest? Anything I can do? Thanks guys!

You can do anything the rest of us can do...see an abandoned building, park your car, walk in. Done. Checked off the list.

The regulars here will all know I love to pop up in threads like this and paste links to a whole bunch of other older threads that are on relevant topics.

But, well, you've hit on numerous different topics, so I'm just going to point you to the motherload:

I'll also add this:

There's locations to be explored everywhere! It can take some practice and a lot of work to figure out how to find them though. Be patient, do lots of research (you're already on the right track having found this site), and you'll find stuff.

Common sense, first and foremost. But, I would definitely suggest checking out the 'motherload' Craig mentioned.

Check maps and news. Occasionally you'll find something changed or mentioned in regards to an empty building.

Plan ahead. You'll need supplies for exploring, but don't want to over do it.

Post here and get to know people. It is incredibly important to get to know members here. It'll open the door to possible group explorations, but it also makes people trust you more, to the point they'll be more comfortable sharing more information with you.

Most importantly, keep your eyes open. I've been through a few cities, and just happened to pass by abandoned properties. I kept an eye on them until they were clear, and jumped right in.

I started out with rural exploration really. I'd drive around and see an old looking house, examine it for a while, knock on the door, then go inside.

That's really the best way to start out in my opinion, it gives you practice on entering a building unnoticed, especially because they are next to roads and really visible. And also on scoping out buildings unsuspiciously.

Basically what everyone else has said, walk around and pay attention. If you see something give it a quick look and see if you can go for it, if you can, do.

Always keep a eye out while driving around. Look for fences, overgrown lots, boarded windows etc. Anytime I see a building with a old brick smokestack I always take a closer look. They are not always abandoned, but are at least old and worth a second glance.
Take alternate routes to places, there could be a great location that is not on your normal route to a from work, school, etc.
Google can also be a great tool. Many times you can find pages from other explorers or news articles about abandonments.
Welcome to the hobby, have fun and be safe out there!!

I'm going to reinforce what everyone else has said to a degree. The biggest thing is to start off slow and be cautious. What we do can be extremely dangerous at times, but the majority of the time it's about as dangerous as putting up your annual Christmas lights on your roof.

My biggest piece of advice for rookies is to go with someone experienced. Find someone locally who can show you the ropes and you'll be golden. Get your basic supplies together, most importantly a good respirator. A respirator and a flashlight is the bare minimum you need, besides common sense and good planning of course.

Never stop learning and reading. I've been in hundreds of places both going solo and in a group environment and still have learned a great deal in my first few days here at UER.

Pretty much everything said above will help you. Watch some videos on YouTube about what people bring, I'll make a small list for you.

Items:
duct tape(if a door might lock put it on the latch so you don't get locked in)
wear long pants, long sleeves too(I wear short sleeves and bring a sweater)
wear boots
flash light
pepper/mace spray
wipes
spare battery
gloves
respirator

Just watch some urban exploring channels on YouTube and you'll get a rough idea.
