This is probably old news to a lot of y'all but I just found it while "finding friends" on FB. https://www.facebook.com/thebakerhotel

Yeah, I joined it about a year ago. Haven't noticed much coming from it. Just periodic updates on possible investment attempts and some history on the building.

I don't know man. Even with media presence, some of these locations will still go untouched. I've had an experience or two similar to that. Some sweet abandoned place that I loved and visited all the time was "discovered" or "recognized" and attention was brought to the place. You get worried at first, but then you realize that anything these people might be trying to do will probably be forgotten about... Just like the location. SO, typically, the place will be safe.

Ha! That's pretty great. I just moved to Austin from Boulder, CO and there was an abandoned sugar mill that had it's own facebook page warning of the dangers of the site and to stay out. BEWARE!! Homeless people have been known to to live at the site, which abounds with toxic chemicals and needles!! lol

I was at the Baker two days ago, wondering what all the dozen or so people were doing wandering around the perimeter with camera phones and peeking over the courtyard fence, lol. They even made it onto the balcony, and seemed ignorant that they could get into trouble, seeing that it was in broad daylight on a weekend. I would have assumed they were there with permission, had they actually had a way in. As for me and my two friends, we had a stroke of bad luck, as one of the people I was meeting to go with the night before got pulled over as soon as she got there, and the cops searched her person, her car, etc. - called most of their police force over there to conduct the search, and saw all her camera gear. She said she was interrogated and they were real dickheads. She was fine, but we decided to go to the army hospital instead since she had already gotten the cops' attention. Bummer!
I wandered till the stars went dim. |
