Hello all, in my introductory post I mentioned my trip to what's left of the Former Edison High School building at 7th/8th and Lehigh in Northeast Philadelphia. I had noticed the shell of it in passing and after scoping it out one day I knew I had to go in. The original building was huge and (arguably) beautiful, but had seen much tragedy - it changed hands several times in the 80s and 90s before being abandoned; a huge fire took most of the building in 2011; then almost all of it was demolished to put in a shopping center, Family Dollar, Burger King, etc. The only remaining part is what's left of an addition that was put on in the 60s. Tried to search the forum for other visits here, has anyone been??

It pains me to see this. The school closed on 2002. The section that is left dates from the 1930s or 1940s. It is another example of why Philadelphia is a piece of shit when it comes to preserving history and architecture.

sad state of affairs as this was once a spectacularly beautiful building. This place was very popular here at one point in time. There is several sets of photos here if you do some digging.

It is weird to think it is almost ten years since I first was going here and hanging out. I always loved Edison even after the courtyard gate fell and the place went downhill. I used to come here before I went to Air Assault school with the Army to practice climbing rope in the gym in like 2010.

Thanks for the awesome verbage, Speed! If my nipples weren't so sensitive, I'd hug your bristly ass! I don't have any decent photos of the stage curtains still whole and uncut (like a European penis). The first time I went I only had a shitty disposable camera and by the time I went back with a real one, one of the curtains had already been "shortened" a bit. Great shot, man. That auditorium was always so fuckin' hard to shoot with all of that blazing sun blowin' everything out. I love the lighting in yours. Here's another shot from the gargoyle turrets.

Man, never got in there, but I remember seeing it on the news when it went up in flames.

Remember when it had all of it's windows and no graffiti?

Thanks to all you guys for this thread. I have followed Edison for years through the eyes and camera lens of others. I have always adored this school.

Thanks for the love, Miss Understood. I was hoping this would turn into a free-for-all Edison tribute thread, since it's been demolished, but nobody is taking the ball and running with it. I love seeing old tribute threads about awesome places, no longer there. It's sad but it's nice to revere an architect's vision long after it's done being appreciated.
