Vermont & Maine

So after my 900th trip down to Belchertown this weekend I'm in the mood to get out and find some new locations. I live in NH so I'm thinking Maine and Vermont would make good day trips and have a lot of potential for cool locations.

Please post some photos from locations in either of these states if you have any!

Fort McClary in Kittery, ME is a cool spot, and pretty close to the border of NH. You're aloud to be there and go inside until dark, and there are other locations close by if you can find them. Here's a few shots:

NH has a lot to offer, shouldn't have to go to VT or ME to find stuff. I would bet there is at least as much around here as there. Of course with all the snow it is a bit of a bitch...

development property is at such a premium in vermont, things don't stay abandoned for long. I live in NY, but I am 5 minutes from the bridge into Vermont (Essex County NY to Addison County VT)

What bridge are you near? I am planning on driving to visit a friend who lives on Grand Isle next weekend. I will be coming from Buffalo area, any advice on the best route and where to cross?

there are only two bridges on Lake Champlain (the cute little highway bridge on NY 22 over South Bay in Whitehall NY doesn't count). One is from Rouses Point NY to Alburg VT... the other one (near where I life is from Addison VT to Crown Point NY). If you run I-90 to NY 365 to NY 8 to US 9 to NY 74 to NY9N/22, you'll be crossing at Crown Point. If you run I-90 to I-91 to Watertown US 11 all the way to Rouses Point (Which takes forever) you'll cross at Rouses Point.

Or run I-90 to I-87 all the way to the Plattsburgh-Cumberland Head exit and use the ferry that runs right to South Hero which is on Grand Isle. ;)

I am in love with Vermont. There's some really interesting places there. I'm sure you can find something awesome anywhere though.

Ended up taking I-90 to 104 to 81 to 11 on the way there. Crossed at Rouses Bay. It was cool to see all the small towns along 11, but it really dragged on after awhile. I decided to go a completely different way on the drive home. Took 87 down to Balstoon Spa where I took 67 into Amsterdam (which had several abandonments)I jumped on the 90 there and took that all the way home. Both ways took me about 7 1/2 hours. But the way home was more miles and obviously higher tolls.
