A couple of weeks ago I made a road trip to explore this abandoned high school. It was originally constructed as a school in the early 1900s and it functioned as such until the late 1970s. It served as a homeless shelter until 2004 when an Art Institute purchased it. It was finally abandoned entirely in 2006 for some reason... It currently sits vacant with no foreseeable plans in the near future. The Front of the School

Auditorium by jasonjacksonrva, on Flickr Since it was used by an art institute, there was a bunch of random art all throughout the building (this is in the Auditorium looking back towards our entrance)

Art? by jasonjacksonrva, on Flickr After we explored for around two hours it started to get dark so we decided to get out. Has anyone else been here? This was by far one of the best explores I've had simply because a high school has always been on my bucket list.

I've never been, but I've seen pix from other people from there. Nice job on this place.

Nice set. I wonder why they left it and why no one has picked it up. Of all the abandoned schools I've seen photographed, this ranks among the cleanest.

So sad to see the art left behind!

Thank you! I'm not really sure why they left it but I did find a letter from the city addressed to the Art Institute telling them they had to vacate by a certain date. Also, don't let my photos fool you. This place was TRASHED but there was still lots of cool stuff to look at/photograph

Yeah it made me sad. I wish the city would salvage the paintings at the very least but I don't think they care what happens to this place

Awesome shots! All the art is so interesting. I'm jealous. They are tearing things down in my area left and right lately and this gives me hope that there are still places with stories to tell out there.

I guess it all depends on how you look at it. I was thinking almost the exact opposite: "How neat it would be to unexpectedly find something like this!"

Be careful there, apparently we aren't the only ones interested in such places... http://blog.al.com...rutal_slaying.html

I was about to say the same, although there's definitely activity inside this one (no murders yet)

The neighborhood this school is in felt very safe when I went, even though it was night time. Hipsters everywhere. I don't see anyone getting slayed here.

really? hipsters? They must have been lost. Although that area is changing a bit, it's still at least bordered by a sketch neighborhood.

Holy shit! I visited this spot 2 times in the last month and out of laziness never posted pics. It's a great spot, did you ever make it on the roof?

Nice dude that's what's up! I made it to the roof but I wasn't up there for long cause it's pretty visible from the street. How's it looking these days?

It's looking pretty damn good, surprising it hasn't been completely boarded up by now. Everytime I found something new and it's great.
