I have a new fondness for winter exploration given these last few weeks. It has been absolutely bone chilling, but it keeps other people inside and away from exploration sites.

That's what gets me. I can handle the snow, but with minus 20 and lower consistently for the last months or so, it's hard to tolerate long enough to enjoy the exploration. It becomes something you want to finish up quick to get back inside, and the fun goes away!

Cold weather and early morning. I was just in a police patrolled area, and we entered before the sun came up. I think it really worked to our advantage, as it was pretty cold and dark...not a cop in sight. I guess they don't want to be out there in that, and assume neither does anyone else.

Actually, I like it, so long as it is an internal exploration. Though the last place I did had few windows, so it was still pretty bad with the wind.

I like to explore abandonment in the late evening although I've had some immense sentimental explores when I've pre-dawned it. I don't like to explore abandonment at night for the reason that I can't see anything without a torch and torches give you away if security or any other form of authority are patrolling the area should they notice your light. During the rain is always perfect.
Anything else whether it be underground or aboveground I enjoy doing at night. Long exposure is good fun.

Summertime, hands down.
Yes, the winter has its "advantages" in that there's less bugs and less daylight (meaning more night cover) and that you can see at a glance from the snow if anyone's been around lately.
However, I hate winter. And I live in freaking ALBERTA. So, yeah. If it's much colder than -10C outside, no thank you.

I definitely prefer winter. The Texas heat is killer, and often worse than that, are certain insects that are more than abundant in the summer months. Anyone that has stepped in a fire ant nest or a bee hive knows what I mean. When I was a child, I almost died after stepping on a bumble bee hive, and I've have a keen dislike/phobia of the damn things ever since. Red wasps are a real pain here in Texas as well.

Supplemental: Ah, you were the post before me, my bad! Yeah, I'm a bit of a lightweight in the cold, but that's mostly because I've never lived nearly as far north as you... I was outside of BC a few years ago on a white water trip, and our water had frozen overnight.., in JULY! yikes.

I'm surprised at the number of people who prefer wintertime but it makes sense for a lot of reasons. Around here we don't get much snow in the winter so it's just cold rain. Not too many benefits to cold rain (hence the reason I am posting and not out exploring right now).

I can definitely understand the appeal of winter, what with the general lack of other people around, the lack of insets, etc. In rural places such as backwoods Maine, where many occupied houses tend to be abandoned-looking, snow is really useful in determining whether or not they have seen recent activity. The bitter cold/wind is no fun though, especially when trying to take pictures with un-gloved hands.
I personally think autumn (October-early November) is an ideal time to explore; Most bugs are gone, colorful foliage still provides good cover, and the weather tends to be chilly but mild.
