First Short Story I've Finished in a While-Dragon Short Story (kind of long)

"You idiot!" Lady Knight Ruby screeched at the young man.

"B-but Ruby," the man protested before Ruby raised her hand to silence him.

"No 'buts'."

"My family has had trouble with his clan in the past. I had to do something to stop the conflict," came the agitated and defensive response.

"There haven't been any conflicts between his clan and your family in years. And even if there was an ongoing conflict, is killing the clan's patriarch really the best way to end it?" Ruby asked angrily.

"I was sending them a warning in case they've been spending the past few years planning something," the male replied calmly.

"Andrew, you ass! You've probably made things worse. And you've taken Flora's grandfather from her. You've also put unnecessary stress on her grandmother."

"So? I was protecting my family," Andrew protested.

"You deprived a young dragon of an important family bond. And you broke the law by killing a dragon for no reason. I should have you stripped of your title and arrested, Sir Andrew," Lady Knight Ruby said with bitter emphasis on the word "sir".

"B-but-" Sir Andrew stammered before Ruby raised her hand to silence him.

"Stop talking. I'm done with this conversation," Ruby snapped. The male knight opened his mouth to protest, but he closed it when he caught sight of the lady knight's glare.

"There's nothing more to say. We're done," she said angrily as she pulled off her gold and ruby engagement bracelet. She glared at him with her sea-green eyes before she threw the bracelet at Andrew's head. Thankfully for him, she missed. Andrew stared at his former fiancee as she turned and stormed out of the room so quickly that her light brown hair seemed to float behind her.

A few hours later, Lady Knight Ruby was ready for Flora's grandfather's funeral. She wore a simple silver underdress and a black overdress with long flowing sleeves. Her silver velvet-lined crystal shoes had been made by Flora's grandparents. Ruby loved the shoes and wore them whenever she visited the clan.

"Good day, Lady Ruby," a woman's voice called as she stepped out of her room. Ruby looked at the woman and curtsied.

"Good day, Your Majesty."

"You may rise," the queen said gently. The lady knight rose and looked at the queen.

"Thank you," she said.

"You're welcome. I heard about what happened with you and Andrew. I'm so sorry," the queen said kindly.

"Thank you, My Lady."

"You're welcome. I believe the knights are waiting for you."

"Will I be seeing you at the funeral?" Ruby asked.

"Of course. Don't be late," the queen replied in a motherly tone. Ruby nodded and curtsied to the queen.

Forgive me for my boldness, You're Majesty, but do I have your permission to turn my back to you so I can get to the knights faster? It's so hard to run backwards and I don't want to hold them up for too long," Ruby asked nervously. The queen smiled kindly.

"Of course, dear. Thank you for asking. Now hurry up and join the other knights," the queen replied in a kind voice that seemed to match her smile.

"Thank you," the lady knight said before she turned and hurried down the hallway.

A few minutes and one slightly twisted ankle later, Lady Knight Ruby was in a carriage with two male knights and a lady knight who was twelve years her senior. The four knights exchanged pleasantries and proceeded to spend the of the ride to the Fields by the White Mountains in silence.

When they arrived at the Fields, they were greeted by little Flora, who was wearing a black ribbon around her neck. The small blue dragon hugged each person after they exited the carriage. After she had greeted all of the knights, Flora grabbed Ruby's hand and pulled her over to the chairs that had been set up. The little dragon led the lady knight to a crudely-made chair in the front row.

"Thank you," she said as she sat down. Flora squeaked and hurried over to her mother.

Ruby looked around and her eyes fell on the pile of wood that covered the corpse of Silvius, Flora's grandfather. She looked at the pile for a few seconds before she glanced over at the human-sized podium that had been set up, then looked to see who was arriving for the funeral.

A few minutes later, the funeral started. A blue dragon named Aria, who was Flora's grandmother and the clan's new matriarch, opened with some loving words about her mate. Flora's father was the next to speak. He spoke fondly of his father and made everyone laugh at some of the jokes that the two of them had shared over the years. Then it was Flora's turn to speak. She didn't say a lot, but her words moved most of the people in attendance to tears.

Once Flora finished speaking, she returned to her seat and her grandmother stood up and asked for a moment of silence.

After the moment of silence ended and everyone had dried their eyes, Aria called the king up to the podium. The king spoke for a few minutes before he called Ruby up to join him. The lady knight's heart was pounding as she walked to the podium. The king held up his hand to stop her. Her heart began to beat faster as she stopped in front of the king. The clan's matriarch approached the podium with a large chest in her arms. Ruby's eyes widened as the dragoness set the chest on the ground.

"Lady Knight Ruby, you have helped our clan greatly over the past two years and we'd like to show you how much we appreciate it," she said kindly.

"T-thank you," Ruby stammered.

"You're welcome. Do you have the key, Your Majesty?" Aria asked the king.

"Yes I do."

"Would you like to open the chest?"

"Of course," the king replied as he pulled the key out of his robe and unlocked the chest. He put the key back into his robe and opened the chest. He pulled out a strange-looking object that he quickly turned upright.

"Lady Knight Ruby, my clan and I would like to bestow upon you the title of Defender of the Clan," Aria said to the astonished lady knight.

"T-thank you," she stammered once again.

"Raise your arms," the king said. Ruby obeyed and the king slid the chestplate over her head.

"Thank you, My Lord," she said as she touched the strange disk-like things on the chestplate.

"Lady Knight, you have been given the two greatest gifts that a human can receive: a title and armor made of the scales of a great clan leader," the matriarch said. Ruby touched the chestplate in surprise.

"T-thank you," she managed to stammer.

"You're welcome. The set isn't complete yet. The chestplate and backplate are made from the my father's scales. We're going to make you greaves and bracers made of Silvius' scales," Aria explained to an awestruck Ruby.

"W-wow, th-thank you," Ruby managed to stammer.

"You're welcome," Flora's grandmother replied.

Several minutes later, the newly-titled Ruby and the king were back in their chairs.

Flora's grandmother asked for another moment of silence. When it was over, she picked up a branch and breathed on it. The branch ignited and she carried it over to the pile of wood.

"Goodbye, my love," she said as she dropped the burning branch onto the pile, which quickly ignited. As if on cue, Flora and her parents stood up and walked over to Silvius' pyre. They touched an unlit section of wood for a few seconds before they moved away. The king, queen, and Ruby followed.

When she was done saying goodbye to Silvius, Ruby went over to Aria.

"Th-thank you so much," she said to the dragoness.

"You're welcome," came the reply. Ruby then offered her condolences to the matriarch and then went to see Flora's parents. After thanking them for her title and offering her condolences, the Defender of the Clan scooped up little Flora and hugged her. The dragon wrapped her arms around Ruby's neck and sobbed into the shoulder of the lady knight's chestplate.

A few hours later, Ruby was back in her room. She was in the process of looking for a place to put her new armor when there was a knock on the door.

"One moment," she called as she hurried to the door. She opened it and found Flora standing there with the chest from the funeral at her feet.

"The other pieces of armor are in here," she said as she reached into her small red pouch and pulled out the key. She held it out to Ruby, who took it and smiled.

"Thank you."

"You're welcome. Should I bring the chest into your room?" Flora asked.

"Sure," Ruby replied as she stepped back. Flora picked up the chest and carried it into the room.

"Where should I put it?"

"At the foot of my bed," Ruby replied. The little dragon put the chest down at the foot of the bed.

"Thank you for coming today," she said to the lady knight.

"You're welcome."

"I have to go back now," the dragon said as she turned to leave.

"Thank you. Goodbye!" Ruby said as Flora left the room.

"Bye!" the little dragon said as she bounced down the hallway. Ruby closed the door and went over to the chest. She knelt down and unlocked it. She opened the chest and gasped.

"Wow," she said as she pulled out the greaves. She studied them for a few seconds before putting them back and picking up the bracers. She turned them over and looked at them for a few seconds before she put them back and closed the chest. She went over to her nightstand, put the key on it, and went to her closet to grab her sword and whetstone. She was the Defender of the Clan and she needed to be ready in case there was another conflict between Aria's clan and Sir Andrew's family.

Note: I know that the title for a female knight is "Dame," but I wanted to do something a little different with this story. I also have a "prequel" short story that I might find and post soon. If I feel like it, I might end up writing a sequel to this story. I wrote this story in a notebook first and started typing it up before I finished it. There are some differences in wording between this form of the story and the handwritten form. Enjoy!

There are a few typos, so I'll post an edited version of the story in this thread at some point.
