Hey guys, I've been infiltrating some of the tall residence buildings, here at UBC, and they lend themselves to spectacular views....
Gage Residence Roof
Marine Drive Residence Roof ... I'm now looking to find access to these mysterious "steam tunnels" that seem to be somewhere under UBC.... so far, I've just found some short passage-ways under a building near the hospital, but it wasn't very exciting, save for this creepy stuffed janitor that the workers left ontop of some steam pipes.... If anyone has info on the access points to the steam tunnels, or wants to come explore with me, please message me!

Nice work. The only UBC rooftop I ever got on was Ritsumeikan residence -- 3 floors up; not much of a vew. It was still damn satisfying. One of the few times I've successfully credit-carded open a door.

Noice! Well, if you want to go up some time, let me know. I was thinking of maybe hosting a Vancouver meet up atop one of the UBC rooftops....

I'd be down for a rooftop meetup
And when you finally disappear, We'll just say you were never here.
SFU Quad is nice this time of year

I've been to Marine roof too! Yes we should have a rooftop meeting!1.

Very nice, though I would refrain from mentioning exactly which buildings if you want your access of them to remain

Awesome! The views are incredible there. I've wondered how much exploring is done at UBC.

More rooftops at UBC!:

Wow, great views. Do you happen to know how high up it is?

These are some great finds, and I'm all for a rooftop meetup happening. Especially with all this nice weather on the horizon...

Majestic view from three floors up, I think F. Fwd building.
Not quite a rooftop, but a stairwell window in I think Sprc Hs building. And for good measure, a tiny piece of the fabled steam service tunnels:
Sometimes doors just aren't securely locked. I thought for sure this was my entrance into the whole labyrinth, but this tunnel ran the length of a building, and had a ladder leading up to another short corridor, which ended in a sprinkler valve room -- as I learned by the sign after I left it.

Almost all of the good stuff I have found lately was on the other side of an unlocked or improperly-locked door. Thank goodness for lazy construction workers and out-of-building maintenance crews (who might not have all the keys they need to do the job while also keeping the site secure).
If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find him, maybe you can hire... Tunnelrunner33!
I found a similar steam tunnel under one of the medical buildings. I think most of the old buildings do have them. But now I'm trying to find access to the longer, networked steam tunnels. There are some new ones that run under University Ave. Right now (Summer 2015) they're building the new SUB and have the man-holes to this long steam tunnel open, all day. However, they actually pay a guy just to sit there so adventurous types like me dont go down.... The man-hole covers have an elaborate 'pressure seal' setup of a few black and yellow bars on their underside.... very impressive and expensive, I'm sure. Makes me doubt my vague plan of prying them open with a pry-bar.... I talked to one of these 'security guards', who was sitting in his chair beside the open steam tunnels. I looked down. Definitely a long tunnel, runs all the way down University for sure. They also had an 'advertising map' up (showing the 'renovated' steam system) which showed a much larger network than I before suspected. The guard told me that it was a big network, to his knowledge, but that he hadn't been down there. "I just dont get it. Why would you want to go down there?" he asked of me, generally. "It's fun to explore. Go places you're told you can't go" "Yeah I get that... but why down there?" "I don't know --- it's the same as why I go on rooftops, here. It's about the sense of exploration, adventure--" "--- Yeah, I like rooftops, too. But why down there? It's sixty degrees down there. We can only have guys down there for 15 minutes" "Yeah, I'll be honest with you, that just makes me want to go, more."

I'm thinking I already know you but highly doubt it. PM me.

It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.
Are those the steam tunnels? Also, I would avoid the health buildings, as I have seen security guards in all the health sciences building. (This includes Wesbrook and Woodward)

Heed this man's advice (speaking from experience - I do similar activities at a different university). Also, be careful about hosting a rooftop meetup - I've done events like that before with 50+ people, but I sat 'em all down before we went up and lectured them about noise, flash photography, staying away from the edge, etc - it's too easy to get caught otherwise. Definitely be careful of alcohol as well - it can make you lose control of the situation very quickly. There was a case at Ryerson a few years back, where a group of students got drunk and went to the roof of a residence - one of the group got very drunk, and the rest, being somewhat drunk, forgot that he was up there and went down. He ended up stumbling clean over the edge, to his death. Cases like that have happened at other schools too. I'm not trying to scare you out of hosting a rooftop meetup, just be wary that these things happen, so plan ahead and be responsible with it. Good luck

Also, I've done quite a bit of collegiate steam tunnels in my day. Hit me up via PM if you want some tips. Also, you may find this tutorial helpful for finding them: http://www.uer.ca/...sp?threadid=119367

Stop what your doing. Death, fire, blah blah blah.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too! |
