This http://www.thenews...to-be-scraped.html gives the most detailed history of the ship that I've read. It also describes the security measures that any farewell-visitors would face.

if the coast guard says its got to go, then we cant really do anything about it unless its drydocked for repairs, put on dry land or sadly, scrapped.

It was in terrible shape years ago, everything above the waterline was recoverable but below deck was bad... Just after visiting one summer the hull broke and it began listing, then it broke its moorings. It would need a brand new hull sadly and up here DNR and the Coast Guard don't screw around with derelict vessels.

It probably would have been better preserved if they'd left it stuck in the ground in Kodiak

Here are some photos of the dearly departed. I will miss her presence, she was the holdout of the Tacoma area, everything's been cut down now from years ago.

Rats, I missed the boat. Great pics! Heard on the radio that it's been moved to a "grave dock" for scrapping.

Ugh. As if losing the SS Admiral in St. Louis wasn't enough... Those were the only two art-deco steamboats I've heard of

Wow Aurelie, nice work! Something tells me you'll be the last one to have photographed the pieces, at least on site.

Yep. Major bummer. I don't fault any of the recent salvage efforts for their failure, though. Kalakala's doom was decided in the 1970's when maintenance on the hull ceased. Once you end up with that much rusty metal, there's no turning back the clock.

I know this is an old thread, but I loved that old girl.....was going to post some pics I took from the water, but after seeing Aurelie's amazing shots, I decided to not bother posting! Great shots....very nicely done!
