I found an '03 Tundra in New Hampshire for $6k that I'm rocking for the winter. 150k, no rot, and Toyota replaced the frame a couple years ago under that crazy recall they had.
Needed axle seals, exhaust, timing belt, O2 sensors, and some other odds and ends. I thought about flipping it since they hold their value so well, but it is a really nice driving little truck. I'm not sure I'd get much more for my money either.
Anybody score any good winter beaters?

That looks nice enough to make it through a few winters, or serve full time daily driver duty for several years.
Being that I live in Florida, I'll never need a winter beater. Thank Bocephus for that.

the Tacoma is a better pickup in my opinion, but for 6k why harp on the fudge?

I like Tacos too, mostly because you can get one with a stick. The 4.7 V8 in the older Tundras is a sweet little motor though.

not being argumentative and really enjoying our conversation so please don't take my disagreement personal or as a hostile nastiness...  I always felt that the Tundra was trying too hard to be something it wasn't. Remember the T100? Now THAT was a truck that was trying too hard.

I'm still rocking last year's winter beater. I ended up keeping it on the road all summer, it's been a fantastic truck.
Got it for $300 a couple of years ago, the passenger side rocker panel had a 3 foot long hole in it (car was hit when it was almost new, and they just ground down the dent and bondo'd over it, so it held in a few gallons of water), the timing belt was 100k overdue (didn't break!) and it was just generally in bad shape. So I welded in a new rocker, did the t-belt, tidied up some other stuff, dropped it 2" because why not, etc... heck, I even placed 6th in an all night rally with the thing in February (with UER member Shadowedsmile co-driving).

You're definitely not wrong... it's like a 3/4 size truck. And being 6'-3", it doesn't fit me like my full size Chevy's did. I can actually spread out more in my GTI. It has plenty of power for it's size though, and there's not much that looks good in the 5k-6k price range. Most importantly, my quad fits perfectly in the back.
Was the T100 really much bigger than a Taco? I never understood it's purpose. Irrelevant I suppose, since they're all long long gone from NEPA.

It was a trade in- they wholesaled it before I got a chance to buy it. So I called the wholesaler and told him he couldn't have it. It wasn't worth much more than $300 when I got it.

I bought my wife a new-used alpine white BMW x5 , in return I got her e46 5spd sedan so that will be my winter car. Im kind of excited to see how the x5 goes in deep snow. I have a set of snow wheels I put on the E46 and its not too bad. Got my triumph Bonneville, 87 vanagon westfalia and newly purchased 84 vanagon GL parked for the winter.

98' MK3 VW Jetta 2.0 GT
bought it with 320 000 km's - and in pretty terrible condition at the peak of trouble since august i had 13 codes, one active misfire, and an idle that could scramble eggs. Had rot like crazy - bandi can attest to this, but i quickly replaced one of the floors, replaced the exhaust, fixed the subframe, rewired half the car, replaced the hood. Now it looks like this - Love this car - it currently has 333 000kms. Has a lot of small problems but its a great beater - and will be perfect for pounding up and down the 401 next year.
