Not going to lie, I had never heard of the NAGR until I googled them just now. I never even truly understood why gun lobby groups were such a big deal until I moved to California either. Always grew up hearing about the NRA and knew that it was a lobby though. Anyways, from your post it sounds like you are making your decision based solely on the legislation standings of both groups(?). Since I already claimed to only be mildly familiar with the NRA and ignorant regarding the NAGR I will only suggest that you also look at the total lobbying power of both groups as well as their regional influence and benefits of being a member of either.

A hardline group that doesn't pass legislation ins't very useful, nor is a group that does not pass legislation that will influence your region (aka you). Additionally I know NRA membership entails benefits such as discounted range membership and classes at local ranges. You would have to decide if NAGR offers the same sort of benefits to suit you (at least at the same ratio or better than both memberships).

Again, just a few points to consider.

i might keep both memberships though

For sure see if there is some way you can opt out of all the shakedowns by just telling them you are going to let your membership lapse if they continue. Really it is the only fair option, cause nobody likes to be hassled. At least there is no mystery now as to why they are the more funded of the two organizations, haha.

NRA all the way, though I would really like them to put some work in getting some of these silly import bans lifted.

Funny thing as I recall our good old GHW Bush signed off on a bunch of nonsensical stuff in 1986 on top of the prior GCA 68 stuff

That's highly unlikely since Reagan was still the president in 1986.

NRA (and ACLU!)
Only the NRA offers firearms safety instruction.
If you shoot a lot, get an instructor certificate.

What's the benefit of an instructor certificate?

youre right it was like 1992 Bush nixed the mg stuff had nothing to do with nfa 86

nra instructor cert is worth a lot if you want to teach, you can earn money but more importantly do some good

half the young kids growing up today with no father have learned about firearms from hollywood and the news media

in our community we are holding several courses for adults and Im working on one just for kids, not nra but still worth doing

Pass on what you know.
Show folks that gun owners come in all sizes, shapes, and creeds.
I teach a class regularly to a LGBT group and to a victims of domestic group too ... it's satisfying to show people who have been victims that they need not ever be a victim again.
