I've encountered a few of these old alarms. Can anybody tell me how they work?
Somewhere this type of alarm was described as "wind up". On site, they always look dusty and uncared-for. Could one assume or hope that they might not even work?

Old school wind up alarms always worked if they were maintained properly. If it has been sitting for 10 years and it looks to be in decent shape it just may work. If it is all rusted out you may be alright.

I've never even thought about this before, but I suppose it's not impossible for one of these alarms to actually go off using some type of purely mechanical system... But I've definitely never seen it happen, or heard of it happening! I guess in any building that's recently abandoned, you're unlikely to find one of these, and any building that's been abandoned a long time, any alarm like this would probably have been triggered long ago, and never reset.

The ones I've encountered are in nonabandoned hospitals and a university library. I'm not even sure how they work. You break the glass, then manipulate something inside to open the door, at the same time setting off the (mechanical) alarm?
I guess I probably won't go as far as breaking the glass to find out.
