Earlier this month, my partner and I went on a much-needed camping retreat to their homeland in Northern Wisconsin. Bayfield Apple Fest gave way to tooling around for two days looking for abandoned stuff and not finding a great deal, but enjoying what we did. This was the first house we stumbled upon, off a remote stretch of state highway north of Bayfield.

I was unsure about the floor in the middle of the kitchen, so we went around back to have a look at the rest. Neither of us were comfortable with the structural integrity of the place to endeavor to try the stairs to the remaining second floor room, though they were still present, or to go down to the basement.

Very nice! I wonder if a family was forced out by the fire or if that was just someone who thought it would be fun to play with matches after it was vacated.

Wow. I really like these pictures, especially the perspective in the third one. You were way up there. I was born right there in Ashland.
There's some really cool stuff in Wisconsin but you have to get over to the other side of the state.
Edit. Oh hey did you get to go check out the ore dock by any chance? I heard they were going to tear it down.

KD2O: thanks! And I have no earthly idea. My assumption was that the house burned while occupied but that's bit founded on anything. Given how much stuff I've seen left behind in other places, the pots on the stove and furniture out front don't mean much.
Chuck: thanks man! It was way up there, heading toward Cornucopia. The ore dock is gone.  its old location was pointed out to me, but they tore it down earlier this year, partner's dad sent photos at the time (he's down in Park Falls now). We'll definitely be back up, and I hope to do more easterly stuff, call on relik, etc. I was pretty taken with the north woods, though. Wind really does make a distinct sound through tall pines! And the fried cheese curds! Oh my fuck!

Easterly stuff, like bunnies and hard-boiled eggs and stuffs? ;]
Cheese curds, fried or not, are quite fantastic. I'm a big fan of the non-fried white cheddar with garlic and dill.

We do non-fried curds in these parts, but my partner has been telling me for years that our fried cheese curds are all wrong. They're breaded. I didn't see what could be wrong with breading and frying some fucking cheese but when I was up there we ate the real thing and...
Just stuff them all straight into my heart valves, okay?

Haha. I guess i've taken for granted the fact that since birth, there have been deep-fried cheeses around every corner. I don't think i've had one in a couple years.. I could maybe go for a few now.

some really cool shots you took. I hope someday I find a house with TV, furniture, etc. So strange when all that is left, but when a fire ruins it all what's the point of doing anything with it I suppose.
