I am hoping I am able to ask a question here without hopefully putting it in the wrong place, but I figure with all you guys being car nuts who else to better ask. or more get some suggestions. basically the thing is, I have a kid on the way, and I currently do reenacting which requires a lot of gear. which leaves me with three options a station wagon, a SUV or a minivan. with your guys knowledge could you guys suggest any cheaper SUV's that are nice and reliable thanks in advance.

Volvo. Indestructible if they're of the correct vintage...except under the hood.
Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing. |

Subaru I was thinking of, going towards the Forester, I've heard they are reliable and good in most conditions. Volvo sorry not a big fan of it. nothing bad about it just don't like it. the other one I was looking at was the Nissan Xterra

Passat 4 motion wagon if you can find
|

one of the requirements was reliable. unless it's a mk4 tdi, a 4 motion passat <4k$ won't meet that. A 1.9L (with an ALH engine so 1999.5-2003) TDI MK4 Jetta wagon would be a good option too.

I'm still saying Cherokee. He can get a nice low miles on for that money. Of course if he wants a wagon Subie all the way. SUV Cherokee.

regarding reliability how is the Cherokee, I've heard the straight 6 is built like a tank, but I have always been skeptical regarding domestics and their reliability

Do you care about fuel milage?

Great engine. Great trans, manual or auto, and pretty solid overall if kept up with. I get 18 with mine, 4.0 auto and running the AC. Has small lift and aggressive 31" M/T's. When it was stock I got close to 21 hwy. Mine has had a horrid life but she still chugs along. Even after being laid over and wheeled fairly hard most it's life. YMMV

Even I love Cherokees. (The real, proper 4.0 Cherokee.)
hi i like cars |

I cannot recommend a Commander. Don't know enough about em and don't care for the drivetrain. But I use jeeps differently than most.
