You need to post less photos for critiques. Like ... 6. They're all sloppy. Work on composition. Straighten up your lines. Take care about your exposure. Try to creat a mood. Snapshots are cool if that's what you're going for. But it's not good photography.

yes these are mostly snapshots. only about 4 that have photographic integrity. all these are taken with my cell camera so exposure isn't going to be up to par. thank you for the critic but they were mostly just to share. probs posted in wrong section, but that's fine.

Put them in the mid Atlantic section. I think that covers the state.

Looks like a fun location. To be honest for cell phone snapshots some of them turned out pretty well. I like the idea of the first one (I love creepy random chairs). 4, 14, 18 are great shots. Maybe lil crooked and a lil blurry...But its a cellphone. Good job! Im no professional tho

thsnk you. honestly is those pics i made an effort to line them up, but, for instance, in the first one i chose to line it up with the wrong lines. I'm not a professional either, but i do enjoy taking pictures.

Yeah. Critique section is for people looking for input on their photographs. The reason for my response. On a positive note. Looks like a cool place. Looks like you had fun. That's what exploring is about. And that's what photography is about. Have fun.

Epic place ! I like no 4

I absolutely love the colours in the chair photo!! Stunning!
Urban exploring since getting chased out of an abandoned barn with my mother at the age of four by an angry farmer with a pitchfork. |

Thank you. That picture was one of my favorites. Barely even needed to edit it.

Someone was in VA. Did you shoot the staircases in the NON-boarded up one? Show me pics of the staircases and cupolas with light streaming in. Those are the moneyshots. And the room with all the "creepy" shit painted on the walls on the top floor of the boarded up one, that is pretty cool too.

it's basically all been said above, but yeah if you're wanting critique you should post your photos here. A lot of these shots don't have a clear subject, or have a lot of clutter in the photo that distracts from the subject. Then those that do have a clear subject need some improvement on composition. Try to incorporate rule of thirds, leading lines, and avoid crooked shots. I know you were just shooting with a cellphone but I figured I'd throw out some tips to keep in mind next time you explore

Are you talking about the spiral staircase? I unfortunately wasn't able to find them while I was there. And I can't remember if I saw the painted room or not. Its been a lil while now.

Not too shabby if these were all taken with a cellphone. Some are a bit shaky and out of focus but some are nice and very sharp. I can see that you were not just standing there taking pics - you changed your vertical position several times to try and enhance several photos to create a scene and a mood. Every photographer looks for different aspects when critiquing someone else's photos and I'm the same. But sometimes we end up in a location where we might need to move quickly (ie: avoiding the cops arriving, security, etc.) and there isn't always the opportunity to have a nicely set up tripod, diffused lighting, and light meters to help with that perfect shot. Considering the above and that these were taken on a cellphone I think that you did alright. My favs are #4, #13, #14, and #18 (if had been more in focus it would have been a great shot - can't imagine being tied up to that although I did work in an institution for almost 25 yrs). You're getting your angles and that's an awesome start: most just stand and click. Composition and lighting are next - but you'll have a hard time of it with a cellphone. Good work

Maybe not actually a critique here. Regardless of whether cell pix or whatever...I liked the 'closeness' a sense of intensity, of the shots. Sort of in-your-face, rather than a long ,view. This seems to put one in the location, almost feeling like an inmate in some cases. Hope this is helpful.

It looks like you didn't go into the right building, judging by what you have posted here.

No I didn't get into the building with the staircase. I was with my ex at the time and neither of us knew for sure which building it was in. The main building that was used as a penitentiary was still awesome though.

4, 12, 15, 18 are keepers in my book. The focus may not be on point for all of them but they have good foreground and background.
