Discovery Bay Railroad (restaurant), WA

Somebody who likes cabooses (and who doesn't?) gathered several of them, added a little engine just for show, and set them up between a busy highway and a tidal lagoon as a pizzeria and espresso shop. And then, I'm guessing, they lost their shirt.

1. Train signal; nice touch.

2. It was hot. I could have really used one of these.

3. The little engine that couldn't (but it did bathe regularly).

4. Ready to roll.

5. Pizza kitchen. The cupola was fitted out with an exhaust fan.

6. Looks safe to approach.

A large patio faces the lagoon, open to the pleasant breeze. Beyond it, a shady lawn slopes down to the water.

I gleaned little from an online search. Once there really was a Discovery Bay railroad, tho this setup seems to have little to do with it. A 2006 posting in Worldmark Vacations Forum reports "Lunch: right by the resort are two funky eateries; the Railroad cars (pizza was very good) and Fat Smitty's."

What we guess killed it; the awful location. Traffic moves so fast here that the pizzeria blurs past before it registers. It's a challenge to get in and out of the parking lot, especially if you have to make a left turn.

That's pretty neat. I saw something like this a few years ago in a little town on the way to Mt. Rainier from Seattle. It was also a collection of rail cars, arranged into a diner. From what I can remember, it was open for business at that time, though I am not sure if it still is.

The kitchen car looks to still be in serviceable shape. It makes me wonder if someone still has hopes of reopening the place someday. Thanks for sharing!

nice shots. I am somewhat familiar with this area, and, to my recollection, this little place was still in operation even just maybe less than 5 yrs ago when I stopped for ice cream......and pics. You are right - location is pretty bad - business wise.

Was in the area this past weekend. Still open! Was pretty crowded one of the times I drove by.

Awesome! I wondered how the flowers in the garden could have survived.

I know this thread is a little old but I've grown up in a railroad town so seeing this hits right at home. You got some really nice shots, If I ever get out to Washington I'm definitely gonna check this out.

cool set, those cabooses will be in good shape for a while, they are reinforced steel wide-cab models from the 1970's. The locomotive is a GE 44-ton locomotive, I would say its circa 1950.

really cool that one of them is BN green with the pre merger markings on it. those are hard to come by these days.

this place is now open and the ice cream is GOOD. still worth the trip, if you're into pretty things and ice cream.

nice timing on the early find, your photos had a very sterile feeling despite the decay. cool photos
