#5 a million times over. People seem to think that because I'm a licensed mechanic, I have this magic sense of where cheap (almost free) cars in immaculate condition are and that I should share the imaginary wealth.
...And I'm starting to feel like I'm a fucking crisis hotline for backyard mechanics. "How do I do the timing belt on my (whatever)?"
"You take it to a mechanic so you don't wreck it because you're stupid."
And the more complete your own garage becomes, the more everyone thinks just because you have the equipment to do something, that hey, Since "I" have the equipment, id be more then happy to spend a day welding whatever BS, or pressing a friggen ball joint for you.

Well, at least you want to hear about my Jetta plans 15 times over...and look at progress pics, and then be forced to look at it 15 times in person. Even if everyone else I show pics/explain what I'm doing to is just like, "uhhhhh.....what?" and you're maybe sick of hearing about it as well.
And I will not be impressed if you buy me a pair of fancy-ass shoes or some bag to disappear for a few days to work on something awesome.
Just sayin'.

Message from a friend tonight: "I bought a G6, I'm having a lot of problems with it. Any suggestions?" "Yeah, listen to me next time you ask what car to buy. Next."
GM hate aside, the G6 is probably the worst fucking car ever sold in North America. Well... tied with the Caliber.
In the inverse of things, In my circles, if I hear talking about the cost of something by a mechanic/dealer/etc I will call them on it and tell them they could of saved money and doing their self and yes, offered to show them how.
But then I notice with a few acquaintances that have Toyotas made in the last 5 years, they claim that "normal people can't work on them because Toyota says only factory trained technicians can!" UGHHHHHH
In the ag industry it only gets worse when it comes to #5. I constantly get calls from local farmers trying to get a bit of free advice. Its not usually a problem but a lot of times they end up attempting jobs withoutthe correct equipment and it ends up beig a clusterfuck of epic proportions.
No you cant borrow 10000 dollars worth of tools to fix your fuck up

even I hated the fucking G6. that tell you something?
Yeah, as an auto tech I generally like helping people but sometimes it gets crazy. I end up putting off things on my own vehicles to fix other peoples stuff for next to nothing (mostly only people who call me when they have a problem or need help).

my brother drives my neighbor absolutely batshit... My neighbor, who I also work with, has a 2004 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4. It's got over 165,000 miles on it and from time to time, little shit breaks. So Andy, who knows nothing about auto mechanics and loves to teach himself new skills (He built a deck for the house just to see if he could do it, installed a hot water heater without help... you get the idea.) will attempt repairs and more often than not fucks shit up. Not out of ignorance, just out of lack of experience. So my brother will offer advice, but won't help. "I've done my time as a mechanic. Fuck that." (and he was, for over 20 years, 10 spent at a Chevrolet-Pontiac-Buick dealer). But sometimes he offers to help (like doing the rear brakes on the silverado, which all of you know are 15 levels of fuck you due to corrosion) and then makes himself scarce.
so who gets drafted into sharing my knowledge... yep, you guessed it. (facepalm) i hate that.
Posted by bandi I should add, when I get car questions on UER through PM or otherwise- I'm happy to reply. It's one of the reasons I started this forum.
Well that's good to know! Now I don't feel so bad.

Posted by Professor Chaos now I feel bad bandi for messaging you when I was rebuilding the audi. But that's what you get for being the only vw guy I trust.
I DON'T MIND!!! It's random people who I've known for 2 minutes and suddenly they want me to find them a '99.5-2003 TDI Jetta with under 100,000 on the clock for $1000, or want to know why their Hyundai Elantra stalls every 3 days at precisely 4:48 pm.
