Toward the end of March, I went down to Charlotte to visit my relatives. On the way home, I stopped in southern Virginia for a relatively rare out-of-state explore. This particular rural road is home to dozens of abandoned farmhouses. Due to time constraints, I unfortunately only had time to stop at one but I made it count. This two-story house sits a good ten feet or so down in a ditch from the road and is mostly hidden by trees. I doubt I would have noticed it if I had driven by during the summer. To get to the house, I first had to climb down a very steep embankment which ended with me tripping and sliding in the mud. Then I fought my way through a small field of brambles, thick bushes and small trees. Again, I'm glad I wasn't here in the summer. Finally, I hopped up onto the rotting porch and found both front doors open. The rooms in the front of the house are in decent shape but farther back you go, the more treacherous it becomes. In the rear, I found large holes in the floors, mold and other nastiness. Judging by the contents of the house and its condition, nobody has lived here in decades.

2. The porch was creaky and the brush was beginning to invade it.

9. It looked like somebody dumped their entire bathroom cabinet onto the bedroom floor.

11. This room was at the very rear of the house. Very smelly and nasty.
12. The rear was in considerably worse shape than the rest of the house.

14. The bathroom was partially exposed to the elements.
This rather unexpected explore was a nice break from driving and a great opportunity to see an old house that has been left to decay on its own. As I said, there are many more like it on this stretch of road so next time I will plan accordingly and make time to see more of them.
